Hello all.

Firstly HI - I am very much a newbie and scared to post here because I'm a relatively new driver too!

So my dad just dropped me off my first car. A used fiat panda eco active. I love it. But, he really doesnt know much about cars and especially this car.

I'm sat in it looking at all the buttons and so confused. What do the buttons mean (I know the hazard lights though)

And where are the fog lights?? I'm not expecting fog but i need to know just in case right?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Is there a handbook in the glove compartment? If there is that'll show you what all the buttons and dials do.
If there isn't one you can download one from here

https://www.fiatforum.com/downloads.php?do=download&downloadid=241

The rear fog light button is to the right of the heated rear window button (under the hazard button) , the front fogs are to the left of the heated rear window button (there won't be a button there if you don't have front fogs).

Welcome to the forum, you're obviously very lucky to have you dad sort you out a car!

:yeahthat:

Everything that man said, just down load the manual and at the front it will tell you what all the buttons do, and all the ones you probably don't have.

I believe if the Media is to be believed the first thing you do when you get a Panda as a first car as a present, is to go to McDonalds the drive home listening to Westlife's "Flying without wings". with your windows open on the way home. (y)

Welcome to the FIAT forums!

Don't be scared to post in the forums - its all very friendly and everyone is helpful

Good luck with the Panda - but I'm sure you won't need luck - just a bucket and sponge and warm soapy water - its difficult to keep a car clean at this time of year!

As a new driver the best bit of advice my (racing driver) dad gave me was "treat every other driver on the road as an idiot - expect them to do something really unexpected - that way you will be ready for when they actually do it!"
He also said "Expect the unexpected - such as... The school bus coming towards you on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend ...On a Sunday!"

I heeded this advice, and 45 years on I'm still here! :slayer:

My Panda of the same year and engine seems to have the front fog button, but no front fogs! I wonder if the wiring is there for them :chin:

Enjoy the new Panda anyway! Had mine as my first car and for 3 years it's been pretty reliable and fun to drive.

If you have the switch/button its likely you will have the connectors behind the bumper. However, you will also need the correct bumper inserts to carry the lights. LED spots are nice but probably won't work with the OEM wiring as the body computer works only with the OEM halogens.

In the 2010 catalogue, front fogs weren't even an option on the Active Eco.

They were an option on the Dynamic Eco & Eleganza, and standard on the 100HP, 4x4 & Cross.

It does get interesting. Mine had the spots (which did work despite corroded reflectors) but when I replaced the front bumper I could not get power from the connectors. Sadly I did not look to see if I was getting a bulb fault but it's likely the bulbs are checked on start-up and left without power if a fault is detected. I went with LED spots with integral angel ring DRLs so just wired them the old school way.

I'm surprised you have the switch but no lamps. Fiat are no known for spending money unnecessarily, so an oddity for switches without lights. Unless a previous owner has replaced the centre switch unit with one from a higher spec car. Perhaps meaning to fit foglamps and foound the job too much like hard work.

The switch panel communicates with the ECU (Body computer), so no direct connections to any lamps. It is the ECU that will switch the foglamps on, when it receives a request from the switch, and sidelapms are already on. This feature can be turned off in the ECU using software (MES = MultiECUscan - search for more details), but such features are often not in the ECU on lower spec vehicles. For this reason, the OEM switch and wiring is probably of no value.

It is a lot of work to fit foglamps. And for me, no benefit.
Have you ever driven using front foglamps? They are rarely of any use.
Fog is basically water droplets, hanging in the air. Each droplet magnifies and reflects your headlamps back at you, effectively creating a wall of light, that is difficult to see through. Foglamps have a flat beam. The theory is that they will reflect back, but all the reflected light is below your eyeline, so helping you see through. With them mounted low, the light is also low, and of little help in seeing where you are going. If set too high, they will reflect like a headlamp, if too low, they light the road, but so close to the car they're of no help, but will reflect the road dampness at oncoming vehicles, making it more difficult for them to see, so more likely to crash into you.

Your headlamps have a load compensating adjustment. Usually set to zero, for normal, each number increment drops the lights a little, to compensate for a load in the boot. This is great in fog. Just drop the headlamps until they no longer dazzle you. You get better light than foglamps, and no expense. On a Panda, those are the two little buttons at the left of the instruments. Only works on dipped headlamps.

My car came with front fogs. Checked them once, they worked, never switched them on again. Then one caught a stone and cracked.
Choices:
1. Drive with a broken foglamp. OCD will get to me on that oone.
2. Repalce with a new one. £65 at the time, for something I'd never use.
3. Remove and fit blanks from a standard car.
4. Fit Daytime Running lamps in the fogholes. Done.

First set of Ring DRLs lasted 7 years, yellowed a bit, then one stopped working. No longer available from Ring.
Found these: https://www.auto-lighting.co.uk/pro...e-Running-Lights-Round-4-LED-CREE-HQ-V11.html

I needed to fashion a piece of 12mm plywood for a base, to lift it to the centre of the hole, then a bit of silicone sealant around them and they look as if they're meant to be there.
Have a look at post 8 here: https://www.fiatforum.com/croma-ii/326285-drl-daytime-running-lights.html

What did you use as replacements Dave? I need to change one of the fogs in our 100 and I fancy LEDs, Halo LEDs would be even more preferential :slayer:

My panda has been in the family since new and it's always had the front fog switch, despite not having the front fogs, it does click, but I can't hear any relays clicking on or off. If it wasn't an option that's rather odd :D

Maybe that day in the factory they only had that switch cluster with that switch, and decided to put it in mine rather than wait for a proper one.

There was a lot of that in the 90's.. ;)

An old friend had a Croma of that era..
dash full of buttons.. they all worked.. but very few were the correct function for the correct button

Took him ages to remember what button switched on key features :)

Those of you with a 'front fog' switch but no lamps are seeing two fog switches aren't you? They've all got a rear foglamp.

Front fog icon should show beam lines pointing down, rear fog points horizontal.
