Indeed Jock. For me, the more “aids” on a car, the chances of more going wrong. I consider myself a petrolhead who must get/be involved with a vehicle 100% and concentrate on the job at hand so to speak, and not to be distracted by anything that’s not really required on a vehicle.

'evenin Jim. Just came across this one which I think you might find relevant to our exchange here.

In fact I've watched some of his other videos and found them to be interesting too.

In this instance Jock, as your SEAT is in essence a VW then it should be a simple matter of coding out the stop start, the dealership might not do it but there are plenty of vw specialists out there that would be able to.

I have found and been told by other friends that the Fiat stop start set up is pretty terrible and horribly unreliable at least it used to be I don’t know if they have improved it on newer cars.

Having owned minis since 2013 and my golf since 2015 my brother has dozens of vw camper vans a year and various other cars I’ve had and driven over the last few years, I’ve not really found any problems with anyone else’s stop start systems. It just seems fiat is very tetchy and doesn’t like anything other than a perfect battery.

The stop start in my Punto did occasionally work from time to time, it’s basically sat for the last 8 months barely being used and before that it was only used occasionally a few times a month so I suspect even with a good charge the stop start is now completely dead. This honestly isn’t a problem because when it was working it would only manage about 10 seconds before the engine restarted, at best when driving 100 miles a day for a whole month I did get it to last 1 minute before the engine restarted. It really is a terrible set up on the Fiat as there is genuinely nothing wrong with the battery.

You'd think so wouldn't you Dave, but apparently not. I have a fully licensed copy of VCDS and I've "played" with this without success. Thinking it was just my incompetence I asked the dealer if they would do it and I was told they wouldn't - This didn't surprise me so I went round the back and "nobbled" a mechanic on his break. The answer was it wasn't that he didn't want to help but that it just couldn't be done. He explained it's a locked in feature because it contributes to the quoted emissions figures for the vehicle. I didn't know whether to believe him so went along to our local VAG indy (One of the bosses is married to a very good friend's daughter so I am well known there) where I got the same answer. There are a vast number of parameters they can change for me but not this one!

I've now become so used to punching the disabling button as part of my start up procedure it really doesn't bother me any more. The only thing I wonder about is that when you punch the button it lights up to show it's disabled - wonder how long the little bulb will last being lit all the time like this?
