Halfords make me laugh!! You would think their knowledge is king but from my experience half the stuff they have advised in the past is bull****!

“Oh it’s bumper off to change day light bulb”
Yeah ok?
I'm lucky enough to have a trade card for them and there are definitely parts bargains to be had using it. However, in common with the majority of these "American modeled" fast fit type set ups, whilst they are very convenient as you can usually just drive in, they are not usually good at more complex stuff. - Halfords seem to have a wee niche in car audio too so you might expect them to be a bit more switched on with electrical stuff?

To be fair I'm assuming this will be a Halfords auto correct as opposed to a Halfords store so same standard as a kwick thick branch haha

As above, the Earth step could be responsible for the starter not 'starting' after 3 new starters then any decent garage should have worked out by now it's not the Actual starter motor!!! The failing earth strap can be 'jumped' with a battery jump lead to test if it is failing ( again any decent garage should know this!)
And the big one ( as above) tell them you do not expect to pay for any parts unless it fixes the problem, any monkey can change parts ( if you are paying for them) that's why they are called Fitters now not mechanics because then can fit parts, yes but the art is finding out which part to replace!!!!!!

As Texas said, they haven't fixed so you shouldn't have to pay too much. As at home get family to rent a low loader and go back with them to collect the car and bring it home to have fixed.

The original battery in my car was a Halfords one Hb012 however on their system two other ones were coming up but they suggested that we get the exact same one that was already in there as that had been working before?

An HB012 would do the job.. (I vaguely recall the Younger Mrs S. has one in her Rasputin, which is a 1.2 with S&S like yours)... but don't get too stressed about the battery spec. It just has to fit in there and have a lot of juice in it;

HB012 is 207x175x190mm high and can deliver 400Amps (power) and 45 Amp hours capacity (how long it can deliver 1 Amp for).

HCB063 is 207x175x175mm.. so it's a bit lower but is "the same size" .. it can deliver 425 Amps and 46 Amp hours capacity. So it has a bit more "juice" in it and it would last marginally longer before it goes flat.. but essentially they are identical in performance.

But the HCB063 is £5 cheaper and half a kilo (18oz in the old money) lighter, and it's guaranteed for 4 years instead of 3 ... so it looks like the one to have, on paper at least.

Hi all, finally some good news! Picked up the car this afternoon after having to go in and get on at them to fix it, have got the old battery and old starter motor back to have checked independently. they said they could offer no compensation and that I would have to email head office which I will be doing. They were more concerned that they had to pay double the price for a proper fiat part while only charging me for a normal priced one. Thanks for everyone's help these last few days.
