Sorry for being a pain guys but is it safe to take off my battery for charging? Not bothered about radio code as I am replacing it. Also what's the best route to go with the alternator? New, reconditioned, upgrade to better? Any suggestions on suppliers and rough cost would be appreciated. On a tight budget!

Yes you can take the battery off without any problems, it should not affect the radio as it’s coded to the car and even when disconnected as long as it is in the same car when the power comes on it won’t need the code, the code is only if you tried to move the radio to another car.

Personally these things are cheap now, I’d by a new alternator from a reputable company, but it depends on your budget, people like euro car parts or GSF will probably list a price for the alternator for your car on their websites.
If the budget is very tight a used one off eBay might be fine.


I’m not sure you can get an upgraded alternator.

OK. After reading all the threads on here I think best and cheapest route is cleaning all earth connections and replacing the original 16 year old battery! Where are the earth points to clean? What's the best battery? I assume highest Ah for its size (44ah after quick Google search and go for good make like bosch or varta)?
