Hi all
I have just joined; I am based in London, UK, and have just rescued a 1978 124 Spider 2000, carburettor model. After unloading it from the trailer, and having been told it was running recently, I tried to start it but it seemed to be locked solid. After a lot of pulling on a long bar and socket on the crankshaft bolt, it turned almost all the way round 360 degrees but locked at TDC each way (clockwise and anti-clockwise). Valve stuck and bent I thought so started to take the head off. Thought it wise to check valve clearances to confirm my diagnosis and they are all perfect...
Removed the radiator and timing belt cover and it now turns all the way through 360 degrees...

BUT, there is no compression at all, not even a puff, on cylinder number three - I have removed all the emissions valves in the head - does one of these go right into cylinder number three and all the puff is going out here?

I can see the exhaust valves through the plug holes but cannot see the inlets very clearly...

The exhaust valves all seem to be perfect...

The only things I can think are that the head of a valve in number three has come off, got stuck in the piston top but is now allowing the engine to turn over, leaving the stem of the valve jammed in the guide but giving the correct clearance at the shim/bucket..... any ideas?

I have removed the starter motor and that has made no difference...?

Could be timing belt slipped and ruined a valve.
Emission valves feed the exhaust system not the cylinders.
Get a new belt and set the timing to specs but likely it is a valve or worse and the head needs work. Be gentle turning over the motor to prevent more damage.
Cheers
Ron
