Howdy folks, this is my first post and i plan on sticking around for a while!

I recently bought a fiat punto (1.2 8v mk2b (2004)) and took it in for mot, they said that there is play in the gear box ( inner cv joint can wobble about a bit in the diff on both sides ) i think it might be bearings or somthing but im not sure, i know the diff can be removed but cant find a cheap diff online anywhere ...

I have made a video which is 14 seconds long, just showing the play in the diff, but cant link till i have 5 posts lol.

so Tl;dr, play between cv joint and diff, any idea what this could be caused by ?

Many thanks - JD.

If the gear box is quiet, the bearing should be ok. Is the play between gearbox and splined inner joint(held in with circlip) or inner joint and drive shaft(inside inner cv boot)? Are the cv’s in far enough(very little gap between flanges) need to post more to get vidio up.

Hey, thanks for replying ? I've taken the n/s inner CV out of the diff and removed the oil seal, re inserted the CV joint half way, and there appears to be about 2mm movement in the bearing?

I checked the splines and I cant see anything alarming there.

I tried checking the small gear that the shaft goes into and it feels like less play than that of the bearing.

Thanks again ! I spent a few hours checking the forums and I cant find anything in particular to my case.

Thanks again

Oh yh, kind of important fact I forgot to mention, the n/s inner CV basically just popped right off as the CV boot had come undone, however on the mot they states there was play in both sides ?

hey again, im in north wales, bit of a drive lol... the clip was on it, i brought it in to snap some pics, just needa upload them somewhere ?

The shaft has to lock into the planet gears in the diff
Thats where the support comes from
Itd suggest the differential may be worn

On saying that on my diff explosion recently - the plastic liners probably worn thin and allows these randonly play to appear

Surprised no oil is leaking out

Ziggy

i assumed it was just the diff, i've been trying to find just a diff to replace it, rather than changing the gearbox (prices are extortionate! ) however nobody wants to sell me a diff lol.. if im honest, i worked at fiat for a few months and have done plenty of diff recalls on fiat 500's however, im a lvl 2 fast fit tech, so im not really good at diagnosing this stuff lol.

On your last video, you have removed four bolt and the housing plate, the plate holds the shim in place, which gives the preload on the bearing, that’s why the bearing is moving!!! No shim !!

oh, well i showed the with and without in the videos :p so do you reckon its worth biting the bullet and finding a new G.box, if so i may aswell do the clutch too, doing the timing belt when i can afford it. so all in all a fun project.

You can get bearings on eBay,about £25 each. Remove gear box and take diff case off.The bearing pre set has to be measured and set. If Take your time,it’s not that hard. Check bearing surfaces, you may only need one bearing set. Unless previous owner has striped and forgotten to fit the shim back in!Do you still have the shim!(big thin washer)between bearing and housing plate.?

honestly when i took the plate off there was nothing more than you see in the vid, perhaps someone has had a fiddle and didnt refit the shim? thats likely the issue!
