Thanks very much judderbar, I've copied that to my files - gearbox info is so hard to come by now that Haynes don't include it any more. There is a lot of mention of "caulking" in it. Doesn't seem to be the same as I would understand from the word caulking - which I would associate more with seams in bodywork or home decorating. Any idea what they mean?

JDP 12. You ask whether the bearings need pressed in? Well not really so much as far as the casing is concerned but that is pretty irrelevant as they will be a very very tight fit on the diff cage. You will not get them off in situ. The diff casing will need to be split so you can remove the crownwheel/diff cage assembly and work on the assembly on the bench. Not only will they need pressed on (you might manage to drift them onto the diff cage with a punch if you heat them in the oven first, but I wouldn't try as you are likely to knock lumps off them) but you will usually find they are very stubborn to get off! If you are not a regular enthusiastic car maintenance/repair sort of guy/gal with a good selection of tools you will probably find this to be quite a challenging "adventure"!

Good luck with whatever course of action you decide on - hope it doesn't hit your wallet too hard.
Kind regards
Jock

Many thanks for the info, I will order the diff bearings, pop the diff off and take it to a local garage, I may have over spent by ordering a few of the minor failed parts from the mot, but I have roughly 0.00000001% idea how the brakes past, so I'll do as much as I can myself.

Local garages are a bit iffy so I prefer doing the work myself, again thanks to everyone for all the input, I will update this thread as to wether or not the bearings worked when they're fitted !

Multipete, I am also thinking something is not adding up here. When I took apart my gearbox roller bearing it was quite badly pitted where it had ground up metal but it was not otherwise worn. The pitting would make the bearing tighter rather than looser.
Now we're getting somewhere! Picture of worn bearing please.

I noticed play from left to right of the complete diff, with drive shafts out,so stripped diff case off,to find bearing surface pitted, the bearing was “rough” to turn, fitted a new bearing and and managed to use the old shim(as it had slight preload as required)and that got rid of the play, but the box did not appear to be over noisy before. Still running a year later, with no issues. So the pitting did in fact reduce preload in my case.

Multipete, do you know if it is possible to take off the differential to release the drive shafts and put new bearings in without otherwise releasing the driveshafts?

If you support the cups does the differential cover come away without disturbing the driveshafts?

Unsure what you mean, but I take drive shafts out first. It would be possible to remove diff with drive shafts in provided you can get the two front 13mm bolts that hold the diff bearing carrier off. But why would you? Its so much easier to get inner cv’s out of the diff while gear box is still in the car. Doubt you could take diff and casing out unless you get the diff to hang real low at the back for access. Yes, To put new bearing in,you need the cv inners out of the diff. You can take the outer diff housing off only, and leave everything else in place, providing you can get the 13mm bolts that hold the metal diff bearing carrier flange off. Hope that covers what you mean.

Thanks that does cover my question. I was wondering if I could avoid undoing the suspension to replace the bearings. I keep my car undersealed and it is a real mess to reapply the stuff for all of these jobs

hi all, my sincerest apolagies for the late reply, been very busy as of late, im fairly certain it was the bearings, they were very "crunchy" when disassembled, i took the diff to a few places and they all gave me some bs reasons as to why they cant change the bearings, so tl;dr i whipped out the credit card :X and bought a scrap g.box, clutch, timing belt. replaced the g.box and fit a new clutch, for obv reasons.. all in all im about 300£ in with some other bits n bobs, but its fixed now as far as i can tell, shame i cant give any more updates to you all! just wanted to say thanks for all the help !

Glad you got it all done. Those gearboxes are full of valueable parts for a person who needs that particular part. Ziggy for example is always looking for his next differential! Please try to sell the parts rather than dump them.

Well I'm in valley,North Wales. If anyone wants any parts I'll gladly give them away! Would happily spare anyone else from having to spend 140 quid if I can lol
