Hi All,
Hoping someone can help me to diagnose a clicking noise coming from the top of Engine. When idling it clicks exactly like the indicators are on and increases slightly as revs are increased.
Any suggestions as to what it might be would be most welcome.

Sounds like a valve clearance needs adjusting. If an overhead camshaft engine the camshaft will need to come out after measuring the existing clearance, in order to fit the correct shim. If a push-rod engine there is an adjusting screw and lock-nut, screw it tighter with the engine running warmed up, until the noise goes away.

just to confirm what RB posted your engine should be multi point fuel injection SOHC (OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT) so as previously said likely to be new shims or shim adjustment. if you go to WIKIPEDIA Fiat Ducato a lot of information available.

While you can fix the clearance without removing the head you need to ask why the clearance is no longer to correct tolerance. A compression check will tell you if there is any reason to investigate further. 350-450 psi on all 4 would indicate all is well, but wide variation between cylinders will be a prompt to remove the head and look for burned or otherwise faulty valves. When replacing any valves removed for refacing always replace the stem seals to minimise oil consumption.

globetrotter. why are you running two separate threads on the same question and subject ?? it seems pointless to me that having answered the question on the other thread that you keep asking the same question on this thread, or do you have two separate 2002-- 2ltr petrol ducato vans with the same problem.

jt61....firstly, the original question i asked (as a newbie) was if anyone could give me an idea what the actual problem was!! which was answered by a couple of members quite positively and to who i thanked for their answers.
The other question i asked was a different question asking approx how much it would cost and how big the job would be, posted in the section that actually deals with Ducatos so hardly asking the same question as posted in the newbies section.
Wasn't aware of breaking any rules!!

RB, many thanks for that info, the engine has only done 27k so would be unlikely to be a valve problem i think (although by no means an expert) so will get the compression test done as a 1st step to getting it sorted out, thanks again.

RE GLOBETROTTER68 answer to my question so in that case why are you not replying to postings in the DUCATO sections where you posted FOR information and answers have been posted, it may not be against the rules but its bloody frustrating when one answers and provides relevant information, it just leaves one asking ones self WHY BOTHER.

Don't know why you,re taking issue with me over "not replying" to answers to my post. 2 members answered my question, RB,who gave a really informed answer to which i answered thanking him, and you, who only confirmed what he said but still i answered your response with a thank you, so why are you wasting your time moaning at me over something SO PETTY and irrelevant, can i suggest that you take a look through the posts throughout the forum and you,ll see most of the posts that receive a reply don,t bother to reply to the response, which i find really discourteous so i always acknowledge a reply. Hope we can put this to bed now as i have a life to live and can,t spend anymore time justifying my position.

All a storm in a teacup if I may make the remark. When I volunteer help I don't expect thanks nor do I care if some other contributor doesn't agree and says so, I always do my best with the knowledge I have which like everyone else's is incomplete. Often 2 or 3 opinions will give the question a better coverage, and many times when I provide an opinion somebody else tells me something that never occurred to me. So let's not get annoyed about minor offences which are not offensive at all, not to me at least.

The voice of reason, thank you RB.

Are you sure its not an injector, the rail can amplify the sound. If its only one or two tgat are bad and you put your finger on each one you can usually find one thats clattering by feel. Or use a piece of hose as a sthetoscope to find which one the noise is coming from.

Thanks for the reply but didn't think that petrol engines had injectors, the last time i looked it has spark plugs!!
