Re: Change engine oil

It might be that the reset technique doesn't work and the oil change message can only be cleared by someone with the proper, licensed Fiat ECUScan software. It wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer makes the message very difficult for an amateur to reset.

But I dunno 500L ... maybe there's a way.

Have a look at www.multiecuscan.net.

My Stilo has a "Service Due" indicator that can only be reset by someone with the correct licensed version of the Fiat ECUScan software. I only have the free version, and so I can see the option but it's greyed out. I guess your oil light is something similar.

The garage that did the oil change .. should have sorted all the necessary resetting.. that is what you paid for

OBD.. fault code readers..
It is not necessarily something that will show in an Engine Management scan.

As it will be manufacturer specific.

Get it back to the garage.. if no luck.. post your location.. somebody may be near you with the correct kit.

Yep you are correct. The obd communications use specialised AT commands which are not visible on generic readers and will need specialised implementation to access certain modules on the canbus network - every modern car does this, you name it, Ford etc. Just some still keep traditional combinations but most are using various canbus specialised protocols.

If the OP did a search, there has been many threads about this including my post about the accelerator trick not working (it might but it doesn't seem to for everyone) - also you need to ensure the dpf registers on the ecu are internally cleared so that the regeneration processes can still continue!

As I changed the oil myself, I made my own modified elm327 v1.4 and then using a registered version of multiecuscan reset the:
  • Service
  • Oil degradation reset

Alternatively, a replica of WiTech MicroPod II can also reset it the official way using the official mopar software offline. MultiECUScan is a reverse engineered project of the mopar official tool on the cheap without requiring the expensive fees they charge for the software online activation and dongle.

The micropod is what the fiat dealers would use, it does firmware updates to all components on the canbus network - modified clones have been created with the witech software offline which would perform all functionality of diagnostics with the exception of updates. MultiECUScan has been good enough to perform all operations of the micropod.

Most garages use the snap-on diagnostics tool which also has a couple of specialised fiat functions. Anyone using a generic elm should be avoided, they have no clue at all - unless it's without the resistor for canbus removed and with the fiat multiecuscan diagnostics.

Fiat multi ECU scan or multi ECU scan did not reset change engine oil light for me. I used an alltel md808 cost me 240 quid still cheaper than the mechanic who did the service and reset the service indicator but the oil reset indicator is separate and has to be reset separately.

Some people say there's no sensor which can pick up dirty oil or low oil pressure. Personally I think low oil pressure is a factor with an active sensor for it but there's a multitude of factors that caused the change engine oil warning to come on as opposed to the service indicator LED.

In my case I gave the car to the garage to check a small oil leak near the salamander belt (I don't care that you call it serpentine) but mechanic decided the engine had a timing chain and the oil leak was tiny so you didn't fix it but what I suspect he did do was chuck my clean recently serviced oil into a big fat barrel and then refilled my car with the thickest dirtiest broken down all from said barrel which triggered the oil pressure low sensor alarm once triggered I've got change engine oil LED but needs resetting as I say multi ECU scan didn't work but the autel md808 pro cleared it straight away. I did not have to set any DPF parameters no DPF reset the ECU responded with plausible DPF factors which I left alone. Some idiot care has to be taken in that the hotel can certainly change engine management parameters which in my opinion should never be changed because I trust the manufacturer more than any other authority

It's nothing to do with the quality of the oil

They change oil warning come on based on millage covered since the last time the oil change procedure /reset was carried out also the number of dpf regens effects it so more regens reduces the oil quality

Hi,
As others have said the garage did not reset the system properly when they changed the oil. You should take it back to them and get them to do it properly, or even better they pay for a proper Fiat garage to do it.
What engine is in your car?
You could get Multiecuscan ( Fiatecuscan is long out of date, it was renamed years ago) www.multiecuscan.net and an interface http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Fiat-A...n/282526378637 and do it yourself but this will cost 70-80 assuming you have a windows laptop, but you should not have to. It does not sound like you will be doing your own repairs so it would be wasted money.

The pedal pushing oil change reset for Fiats is:

1-turn on the ignition key,
2-press the gas pedal and hold it,
3-press the brake pedal 7 times without releasing the gas pedal,
4-keep pressing the gas pedal for 60sec.
5-Release the gas pedal and turn of the ignition key,
6- Wait for 60sec.
Then turn on the ignition key and start the engine. Check if the service/oil change light turned off.

Use at your own risk, may not reset DPF counter on all models Multiecuscan is a better option.

Re: Change engine oil

That's not wholly correct for all post 2008 ECUs.

The "change engine oil" light (not the service indicator) is based on an algorithm using mileage, DPF cycles, drive style & oil pressure. Once triggered the data flag is static until an ECU reset (inline with an oil change) is done.
