Hi all, just bought a clean low mileage Grande Punto. I'll be lurking, but I'll ask for help as needed (hopefully won't need much).

Thanks Charlie, 2006 1.2, 88k klms. Nice clean car, however....

Seems to have an oil leak at the top of the engine. Checked the large breather pipe under the airbox, seems ok. Could there be a seal missing where the airbox sits on the inlet manifold?

Welcome to the club!
Finding the leak when the oil/dirt is blown all over the place is a hassle. So what I generally do whenever I spot an old oil leak is clean the area with brake clean or any other degreaser, take it for a short drive do another visual inspection. Usually find a single droplet that has managed to escape the engine.

Thanks, I'll do that. Hopefully it looks worse than it is. Never spotted it when I bought the car, well hidden behind the airbox. MAF sensor covered in oil as well, cleaned it but it appears to be FUBAR.

There is only oil on the outside of the MAF right? Should take quite a while before it disintegrates from an oil leak. Engine oil wrecks havoc on rubber mostly but on the bright side it's also excellent at rust prevention.

Nope, oil on the inside as well, quite a lot around the top of the engine.
I'm having the dreaded coolant sensor fault code. Cleaning the MAF sensor has made no difference. Should I try cleaning the coolant sensor?

won't help cleaning the coolant sensor (unless maybe its connections), if found faulty by MES, replace it !!

Cheers, Bernie

Thanks for that Bernie. Just one more question, what's MES?

MES stands for Multi ECU Scan. That's a software dedicated to Fiat's and also Alfa Romeo, some Chrysler ... It connects to your car thru the OBD (On Board Diagnostic) port by mean of an interface on the car and a "cable".
From that software you can read the fault stored in the ECU (Electronic Control Unit - or also Engine Control Unit) that happens when the engine is running. Some fault would pop-up the MIL (Motor Inspection Light) in the dashboard and put the engine in "limp" mode (reduced power) or even stop the engine completely !

MES is available in full working version for 50 £, the "cable" is another 20 £, and if you want to access the other ECU's on your car You'll need an adapter, so in total about 70ish £ and You'd be able to read ALL the ECU's on your car and also clear the faults, zero the service interval, check actuators etc. Definitely a MUST HAVE tool for Fiat enthusiasts !!

UPDATE

20 euro MAF sensor from breakers and new oil breather pipe plus oil and filters changed and she's running beautifully.

Now for the annoying knock on the front driver's side!

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum and the helpful advice.

Nice!
A knock when going over speed bumps/when front suspension is almost fully compressed? If that is the case jack the car up and generously spray the top strut bearing with silicone spray. This will do the trick in most cases.
Might as well check the suspension components for play when you have it up in the air since it could be something actually needs replacement off course.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it in the morning. Hopefully I'll get away with not having to change anything.

Hi i recently noticed a small amount of oil coming out of the seal under the throttle body but doesn't seem to detrimental may be worth checking
