panda 4x4 rear transmission oil

Hi. (this is my first time on the forum). I have just purchased a Fiat Panda 2014 4x4. I am wanting to check the oil in the rear transmission box but want some oil available. book says tutela transmission cross SAE75-85 synthetic. Some sites say if you get the wrong oil it can damage box. Which oil do i need. Any help please Thanks Paul

Re: panda 4x4 rear transmission oil

I can't remember if that's the right differential oil (someone more knowledgeable than myself might chime in), but something to note is that the rear differential is a 'lifetime sealed' design in that it's not supposed to have any fluid changes, unless you see signs of leaks or fluid weeping around the housing and case gaskets. If you do, however, end up needing to change the differential fluid you'll also need the gasket to be replaced, which is tricky because Fiat tends to bundle the whole rear diff as a single part rather than providing individual replacement parts for it.

I changed the rear diff oil on a 2013 MJ 4x4 a few months ago. Drain plug at the bottom, level/filler plug half way up, no need to interfere with any gasket on that car.

Check the manual if it needs GL4 or GL5 and use the right spec.

The OP has quoted from the manual...

All it says (for the rear diff of the 4x4 and Cross models) is "SAE 75-85 grade synthetic lubricant" and lists Tutela Transmission Cross as being the original lubricant. (The latest version of the manual no longer says this brand of fluid has to be used, as they are not allowed to. Only to 'recommend' a particular brand)

For the gearbox, and the integral front diff, on the 4x4 and Cross models, it is more specific: "SAE 75-85 grade synthetic lubricant, which exceeds API GL5 specifications", and suggests Tutela Transmission Multiaxle.

Reading my post again, yes I should have been more clear. If there is visible weeping under the housing, then the gasket should be replaced not just the fluid, as it's most likely the gasket that's not sealing properly. I was trying to say if there are signs of leaking then the gasket should be changed with the fluid and not just topping up.

Re: panda 4x4 rear transmission oil

GL5 says more than 75W85
So GL5 it is.

Oh! Make sure to loosen the fillerplug before the drainplug. Real shame if the fillerplug is stuck after draining...

Trouble is, it only says 'GL5' for the front end - no GL spec given for the rear diff...
