Hello Forum, I'm new on here and glad to have found it. I'm on the brink of getting a new Fiat, either a Panda or 500 and looking for advice, what's suitable for Scotland's roads (I'm in Largs) and for someone who's not entirely a spring chicken. Ta!

I'm no spring chicken either:) I've just bought a Fiat Panda 1.1 eco 2010 to replace my 52 punto. I'm totally over the moon with it! She has an excellent ride over bumps etc. The skinny tyres have been amazing in the snow recently. Excellent drivers visibility. You actually get very good steering feed back too. Decent large mirrors. Five doors. And a respectable boot:)
I am compering it to my mk11 punto.
My Panda feels quite like my beloved Cincuecento that I owned for over six years..loved that car:( spent far to many hours on welding and other repairs really with hindsight..but didn't want a new car...I did put over 150K miles on her though. Great little car. I love my Panda the same even though we've only done about 2000 miles in three weeks.
I've never driven a 500 but they have the same chassis I believe. Never driven a new Panda either.

Thanks, and really encouraging re how yours deals with road surfaces. I'm ok doing car basics (well, can fill up the windscreen skoosher) but know nothing about fixing mechanical stuff hence looking for something i can trust. My wee Ford Fiesta's been a great workhorse and it'll be a wrench to let it go but this is my last chance to get something more interesting x

I do feel you pain. It not nice or easy changing cars. I am Scottish but live in England...near J44 m6. I do all my own work..was a mechanic in Edinburgh when I left college...at an excellent Austin rover dealership..now sadly gone:(
I became a Fiat fan by accident! I needed a car asap. My local had this one owner Cincuecento for 700...offered. £550 with mot! I bought her..23K on clock. Was an amazing car!
Traveling all over the UK in her..I even did Malaig to Cambridge in one day!
When she was rusted out beyond safe repair I bought a punto. Nice car but no cinqucento! She rusted out in rear sill and floor area and front struts mount. Then I decided to look for a Panda. Etc etc. My local guy found me a one owner car with full service history 103000 miles. So I just bought her!

Reckon I'm probably missing good deals for 2nd hand but am too chicken to go there, hence looking at new/nearly new. If i get to the showroom tomorrow I'll try a test-drive, see how the Panda feels inside. If the dashboard ws a bit brighter it'd be an easier choice, a lot of the attraction of the 500's the dashboard (probably making proper car-folk groan here). Thanks again for advice, hopefully I'll be further forward tomorrow.

The 500 is prettier inside than the Panda, no question. It sound like you're looking at the more recent model of Panda (2012+) which is over on the other forum.

We've has 500 plus the pre-2012 and a 2017 Panda. The 500 two-doors is my biggest gripe to be honest. The later Pandas tend to be more refined and ride better, though the pre-2012 feel zippier and more fun.

Ideally get a pre April 2017 model to benefit from the lower car tax.
