Help no Torque wrench

Hey everyone. Noob again.

Just a question, I need to torque some bolts but I don't have a torque wrench or the 400 they want for a torque wrench. My question, I digress, is there any "diy" torque wrench thing I can try?

Many thanks
ShamZ

Re: Help no Torque wrench

A 1 metre (or bar of known length) bar, a jack and a pair of scales.

What are you tightening?, some things you can just guess the torque or go with 'as tight as I can get it with a half inch ratchet'

Re: Help no Torque wrench

I need to torque the flywheel and clutch. I had to replace the core plug and it seems as though I might have made them too tight cause she won't turn

Re: Help no Torque wrench

Flywheel bolts are only 43 Nm on the 1.1 Uno, that's the minimum setting on most 1/2 inch torque wrenchs, or tighten with one finger on the end of the ratchet until it won't move. I'd put a bit of threadlock on too.

Those parts are 'metal to metal' contact..
Unlikely to have distorted them through over tightening.

Shearing the small bolts holding the clutch to the flywheel through excessive force is more likely...dont ask how I know this..
Fell foul of HAYNES manual there

Not really..

Is the starter actually in contact with the flywheels ringgear..?

Or the battery/ connections are limiting power.. so it spins but doesnt throw the gearinto contact..

Are you dipping the clutch when you crank??

Might spin better..

Re: Help no Torque wrench

For future reference, Machine Mart do a half inch torque wrench. I know people who have used a torque wrench from there with no issues.

Any news on this Uno?

I think Shamz is in South Africa (the flags don't show on phones), don't know if they have Machine Mart there. 'Clarke' is their own brand of tools if that helps any though.

I have a clicky 40-200Nm wrench bought from Leroy Merlin (a diy store) of all places, it came with a calibration certificate and has been tested against much more expensive wrenchs, works fine and covers most 'big' car jobs.

Also have a deflecting beam type Draper, good tool, but frequantly working on a car you can't see the scale, so need the clicky wrench. Excellent for seeing how tight a bolt actually is though. Was only 18€, so might be one to look out for.

Shamz - is it possible the flywheel is on backwards? I've not stripped my Uno yet (getting it running first), but on some engines it's possible to put the flywheel on backwards so the starter will never engage the ring gear.

Have you considered trying to push or tow-start the car?

Can you turn the engine by hand?
