Hi all.
I have an 02 Punto 8v with 68k on the clock. It's developed a knocking noise from the gearbox when stationary that disappears when the clutch is pressed.. and rumbles when the car is in motion. I have changed the gearbox oil today and it's no better. Reckon the gearbox is on its way out? I can get a reconditioned box and clutch fitted for £240, but considering I'm an apprentice on £3.40 an hour it's not exactly going to be, erm, easy... does anyone have any recommendations on what to try before I borrow the money to have the box and clutch done? Thanks!

Do you get any noise when sat at idle?
A rumbeling / sorta ratchey noise?
But goes quiet when clutch is pressed downn (released)

As ive developed this noise yet again!
Everytime ive thrown a clutch and gearbox in and the noise goes away for a while

However due to travel soon whilst towing i couldnt risk a breakdown really...
So ive gone to examine the box and that
And well - turns out my clutch was a fault..
The boss(the bit with the internal spline) on the center plate (friction plate) had worn abit and could move about 3-4mm slop allowing the release springs in the pressure to rattle around...
So new clutch and im off again!

Mine makes a slight knocking on idle and goes when clutch is pressed, and rumbles when car is moving. It's never had a box in its life so I wouldn't be surprised on mine. Been told it's either; thrust bearing, input shaft or seals.

To be honest, I can't see why the gearbox should be at fault. Sure, a gearbox can develop whines and rumbles but in reality they tend to soldier on for vast mileages.

If the noise goes away when you depress the clutch the fault is in the clutch assembly somewhere. If there's an occasional whine or screech that points towards the thrust bearing.

Personally, if it was my car I'd take the cheapest option first and change the clutch - all 3 parts .. bearing, driven plate and pressure plate.

You'll probably get the parts for £50 on Ebay:

Hi Jordan,

We had this issue with my wifes punto, was the clutch bearing.

Changed the clutch along with the bearing myself.

You can get a clutch kit for under £80 at Euro Car Parts.

Dont for the love of god buy transmech
They are refubrished, not new
They will fail fast again!!!

Ive just brought a new clutch through shop4parts ans the ff memebers discount
Was like 60 delivered for a valeo clutch

Ive had several LUK clutches and they have all failed in the same way - rattlin/rumbelling which would go away on pressing the clutch

My release bearing was in good nick and so was the pressure plate

Valeo went into my mrs and again no issues there either!

I got a Valeo also mate. Think it was £79.99 at Euros. Would use shop4parts but they had none in stock.

If the clutch friction plate has shock absorbing coil springs running around the central boss and you can move them round with your fingers, you need a new friction plate no matter what the friction surface is like for wear. These springs get weakened with heat and long use and become loose in their pressed steel housings. Sometimes they make a jingling noise at idle in neutral gear which goes away when you press the clutch. I took off the rubber plug from the bell housing and with a long thin tube on the can sprayed some WD40 onto the friction plate through whatever holes I could find in the pressure plate. Didn't do the clutch grip any harm and it shut those springs up. Eventually I'll need to change the clutch as it's showing nearly 150,000 kms.

If it was Input shaft, then it would still make the noise with the clutch pressed. I had an Input shaft bearing went on mine and it was noisy no matter with or without clutch pedal pressed also the seals had failed. If the input shaft seals go then you get oil in the bell housing which makes the clutch slip.
Cheapest fix for that is a new box which is what i did,
However what you describe sounds more like just a clutch issue,I would guess the cause is either the Clutch Thrust Bearing or the anti chatter springs.
Replacing the Clutch is a whole lot cheaper than replacing the box

Thanks Ziggy, i missed the post where the guy used WD40...
I guess he used the old engineering flowchart....

Well the car went in for welding last Wednesday so got him to look at the clutch/ box. Says it's just noisy bearings, and I'll get many more K miles out of it. It was just playing on my mind as I regularly go from Stoke on Trent to Bournemouth every 3/4 months, and it's not exactly a 15 minute drive.

Cheers, Jordan.
