Tracy , Is there a reason for you not to approach FASS (Fiat Authorized service station) ?
here in INDIA we donot approach FASS cause they tend to charge a lot for simple tasks ,

what I have done is purchased a 3 pin to 16 ping cable ,
2) a Bluetooth ELM 327 scanner
3) installed MES (multi ecu scan) software and hooked up my palio

MES software is just amazing , I am planning to buy the license soon ,

rest you can run a scan against your cars ECU and get the exact problems reported ,

lemme know if this helped ,
you can buy 3-pin cable off ebay.com or your local ebay site ,
also you can buy a Bluetooth ELM scanner from ebay ,
MES is here http://www.multiecuscan.net/

It is the same in South Africa, any mechanic here charges an arm and a leg!!

Tracy, have you had your timing and cam belt checked? My palio litrally gave me 300km per tank before the cam belt snapped. The reason, teeth where missing and the timming changed so much that it was missing and feul economy was just a rumour.

After the new cambelt was installed with the correct timing, she is giving me about 16 Km/l....tank range 550Km.

My palio is a 2003 1.6 16v el, so 16km/l isn't bad for a 14year old car....
