Hi, thanks for the add.

I've been looking st the 500L and have seen the 1.3 Multijet Lounge Dualogic but am confused after reading reviews of underperformance/noisy engine and the automatic gearbox not being good? Has anyone any exoerience of this model please?

The 1.3 Multijet certainly isn't noisy, especially not for a diesel, but it's no ball of fire either. I've driven the manual version of the 500L with this engine, but with a manual gearbox and it's smooth and quiet. It's not terribly slow considering the modest power it has, but it's a 1.3 engine with 85/95bhp (depending on age) in a fairly big car, so one can't expect miracles.

The biggest downfall would be the Dualogic gearbox. They're ok when new, but known for being pretty unreliable when they get to a few years old, and you'd probably get better performance out of the 1.3 if it has a manual gearbox.

Failing that go with a 1.6 Multijet - it's a bit of a noisy beast, but it flies compared to the 1.3 and you'd probably get only a couple of MPG less as it's not working as hard as the little 1.3 has to. Only downside is if you have to have an auto, you won't be able to with the 1.6 - it's manual only, but 6 speed rather than 5 speed in the 1.3.

Take any review with a pinch of salt, everyone has their own opinions. I always think if we followed reviews nobody would buy anything.

Best option would be to test drive a few different ones if you can. As Liam has already mentioned, don't expect miracles in a big car with the engines on offer. I have the 1.4 which I find ok but dread coming up to some bigger/steeper hills as it needs a bit of a run up to them.

Hello everybody. New member here and I'm bumping this thread up in order not to create a new one.

I'm interested in buying the 500L Cross, but I'm confused about engine choice.
I am only interested in manual gearbox.

The 1.4 petrol seems to me too weak for the weight of the car. Is it so? I'm obviously not interested in high performance or sport driving, but I'm worried the car might be dangerously slow (ie in overtaking). The 6-speed gearbox should help things a little bit, but is it enough to make a difference compared to the diesel? I have test-driven the car, but for a short time in the city. It wasn't fast of course, but didn't seem TOO slow.

The 1.3 diesel has more torque, but the above question still applies: I'm worried that the car might be dangerously slow during overtaking. There is no test drive available for this version where I live (Thessaloniki, Greece).

The 1.6 diesel is priced over my budget, but I may consider buying a used vehicle, if the two 95HP engines are inadequate.

Could you please elaborate on performance and consumption for the 2 smaller engines? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I never had a problem with our 1.4 feeling under powered or "dangerously slow"
It's never going to win any races but is a perfectly adequate engine for the car, the close ratios in 5 speed gearbox make it a very usable engine.
You just have to get use to stiring the stick a bit to get the most out of the available power.
As posted above, you'll only get a true feel by test driving.

Thank you for your answer. Any info on consumption please?
