Got the wife a idea active 04 reg petrol a few weeks back, she tells me it's missing and she is getting 26 to the gallon. Any advice would be great, money's tight so it's diy time. Thanks

What sort of trips are you doing as my 1.4 idea gets easily 44+. Also which area are you ?

Do the obvious first, check Air Filter isn't clogged and it's in good condition, check spark plugs are good. Basically everything that are service items and help with fuel combustion, engine breathing. If you need to use the diagnostic socket it's behind the panel in the passenger side footwell, just under the little shelf.

Also welcome to the Idea club, not many of us on here but they are great little cars....

Hi Zeewulf, im in Torquay, south Devon, the car gets used a lot around town and it's quite hilly here. We have a bypass to local areas so the car gets a good run as well.
I've read it should be about 44+ and a nippy little car.
Been under the hood today, air system looks good and I found the diagnostic plug thanks.
I will give the plugs a check, thanks for the help I was feeling lonely

The 1.4 16v is great on motorways but hates hills of any sort (even mine does). They tend to drop off in power rather a lot when it meets any form of hill. Even to the point where i'm looking at getting mine remapped to give it some more torque, the bhp is fine it's just the torques too low on them.

Our max torque is at 4500rpm and our max bhp is at 5800rpm. Which is pretty high up the rev range, hence why they don't like hills much.

If it's missing it could be one of the ignition coils.

agreed - but they cost money..,
plugs and leads are CHEAP . ;)

TBH if it's got as far as needing a coil..then you could be looking burnt stuff, as it's "plug-neglect" that tends to cause bigger issues,:bang:

punto 2 especially..

if it starts and idles o.k.,
then it'll just need a basic service and "setting-up" ,

in all honesty the £1100 1.4 we had ,
was "treated" to 1 x oil and 1 x coolant top-up in 30K miles,
never missed a beat.., :worship:
just had the annoying airbag errors ( Cat C):bang:

Ignition coils at ECP are £23 or £43 for Magneti, you can also get 30% off this weekend until midnight Sunday.

But to be honest before doing that I'd get a garage to check if it is the coil thats causing the missing.

not the cheap DIY approach they want to start with..,:)
Justlearning - how does it start / idle..??

worth checking the plug gaps / even the correct grade plugs are in there..,

look for differences in the colour from the burn too;)

Hi Zeewulf, thanks for the advice, is it best to change the ignition coils if I change the plugs or try just plugs first?

Starts, idles fine

If it starts and idles fine and your not getting any warning lights on the dash, then it sounds like it's going to be plugs/leads breaking down under load and not the coils.

First thing I do with any car I buy is put a fresh set of plugs etc. in so I know they are ok.

Hey, just registered[emoji106]?but I can't start a new topic in any forum...?? A little help[emoji1316]could be cool

Had a play with the car today, ignition coil 4 has been replaced, the others look original.
Plug 2 was a bit messy and the others looked fine although they were loosely fitted.
Picking up new plugs in the morning so I gave the old ones a clean popped em back in and took her for a drive. She was still missing a bit but got worse on hills once warmed up. Got the mpg up to 30 so will see how it is Monday when I put the new ones in.
Playing on my mind , why would you change only 1 ignition coil, I thought it should have been 2. Guess I will find out tomorrow.?
