Hello

I am attempting to have my fiat first time experience but won't be successful until I have it running!

I bought a 1.2 16v Mk2, which does not always start and when it does, doesn't run properly.

I have had it for one weekend and so far;

1. Drove 10miles not running properly, did not overheat or puff strange coloured exhaust smoke, however the engine bay smelt a lot of burning oil.

2. I pulled the air box off and rubber pipe to the inlet. It had the baileys cream oily watery liquid lying in the bottom of the throttle body.

3. I went to remove the spark plugs but the HT leads had degraded and melted over the top of the plugs. I thought I would never get the plugs out! however it seems the previous person did not tighten the plugs, so they came out by hand!!! Probably why the HT leads had melted.

4. Replaced the HT leads and plugs and checked the spark. Cylinder one had a big blue spark but the rest were smaller and orange... although the battery had been well drained by this stage. (But possibly coil?)

My next steps;
1. Charge the battery.
2. Test with OBD. (Any Punto mechanic recommend?)
3. Check compression. (anybody recommend where to get the correct adaptor for this car, cheap?)
4. Start testing sensors and coils with multimeter.

Main reason for posting is to find out if anyone has a similar story or any pointers if I am heading down the wrong road?

Also if there are any friendly fiat people in the Bedfordshire area who could lend some local knowledge pointers to get parts or find garages.....?

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Bob

Just the standard ignition lights showing, no warning lights so far. I will get an OBD reader tomorrow, do you know of any codes which I should look out for?

I attempted to use the OBD reader this evening but came back with, "linking error" numerous times. I know the reader works as I have used it on another car.
Any ideas what this could mean?

Also the battery had drained, I checked the amps draw with a multimeter. I tracked it back to the interior fuse box.

0.5 mA for door locks?
0.2 mA direction indicators/ meter?

Any ideas why they would be draining?
Also could it be linked to the OBD problem?
When I remove them both he OBD switches off!

Any help would be great.

Hi.and welcome.

See the GUIDES for Mk2
Battery drain..could well effect your OBD issue

Sounds like the car needs some attention..
coil pack is the most expensive in the 16 valve..worth getting a solid 12 volt supply before doing more

Hey I didn't get round to the battery drain tonight but I'd did manage to get the car going with a fully charged battery and the new HT leads. Cheers for the advice Charlie.

However it was idling high ~1500rpm. I pulled the MAF sensor and it had a thick coating of oil. I cleaned the sensor the idle went down to 1000rpm and ran pretty well. Within a few minutes running the sensor was coated again and the revs rose then ran roughly again.

Any ideas why there would be so much oil getting into the intake?
