hi i have a fiat grande punto 1.4 16v 6 speed manual 2007 57 plate and have a miss fire i have fault code p0016 camshaft problem i have no live feed from the ECU to the camshaft sensor, so my question is what do i have to change to replace the ECU with a 2nd hand one some people are just sell the ECU and other are sell them with keys, clocks and fuse boxes i would like to just change the parts need and drive away and not have anything reprogramed if possible I thing i have to change the keys but sure whether i need to change the clock as well only don't what to change my milage if possible only done 77k so would like it to stay that way my first post so if i done anything wrong sorry in advance many thanks for any help Cheer Craig :):):)

You need the ECU, barrel with keys and the body computer (or you can reprogram yours)

Mileage on the dash lcd will be the same but the ecu will have it's own.

Then you will need a proxy alignment.
If you have the factory radio you will need the code.

Are you sure it's an internal ecu problem?
Checked the cables? Tested with a new sensor?

thanks for reply i have put 2 camshaft sensor on it at this stage checked the time that all good the live feed is 5v which i thought it had to be 12v for the sensor i have changed the ecu and i still got the problem same code p0016 pulling my hair out at this stage any help would be great radio code wouldn't work with new ecu but if i put the old ecu back on it the code for the radio will work???

any other sensor send the information to ecu to tell it to send 12v to camshaft sensor???? and on the live feed on my box the camshaft sensor is reading zero could it be a simple as i have had two new faulty sensor local motor factors tell me there was only one for my car is there more than one do i need to be buying from fiat any help would be great thanks in advance craig

Put the old ecu back voltage is ok.

Any recent services ? Timing belt replacement etc ?

Check the timing it could be out.

no bought the car with fault of e-bay should have know better all working fine until i had travelled 100 mile to pick up and then told there was a light on the dash he had change the sensor but factors had given him the wrong one took him at his word and he drop the price to cover to cost of the sensor, i have had the timing checked and all good but there is no signal coming from the sensor to the ecu well my code reader is saying 0 and i have also put it on a snap on code reader and that the same 0 signal from camshaft if it's not the ecu or the timing or the sensor what left it all i could afford and it's knackered just my luck and just throwing more and more money away thanks for the help

where is the car..?

using FIAT specific kit MAY help.. MultiECUScan

yeah thanks not to far about 2 hours lol
just looking for someone to put me in right direction that all dont want to just be throwing money away again and again
my code reader gives me the following
Read Codes
P0016
Cam shaft assembly,Alignment or adjustment incorrect,Last test failed,Present,Not requested
Trouble Codes
P0016 $18DAF110
Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A
and the snap on said about the same i have change the sensor myself and same code
so i check wire and i couldn't find the live feed at first on the sensor from the ecu so changed ecu clocks keys (lost radio code) but same code so ecu no at fault, motor factor have told me this is the only one for the car.
i'm get 4.98v for the live feed the centre wire id plussing when running and the last wire earth so would seem to be working but ecu live data not picking anything up on my code reader (MaxiDiag Elite) or snap on on showing zero when running thanks again i sorry i new to this type of help so haven't worked out how to thank you yet so again thanks for all the help craig

I really don't know what output voltage should be the normal since I only use MultiECUscan and I can only see live cam position/percentaces etc.

Can you find a usb obd?

I will tell you again that this could be a bad timing. (most of the time that is)
Are you 100% SURE it's ok ? Who did the timing ?

find a usb obd? not sure what you mean by this is MultiECUscan free and is it just for fiat? my local garage check it for my i don't like doing timing belts it still got old belt on it and they checked timing and told me it was fine they said same thing as you pointing towards timing out but said it was fine, but if timing was out it should still read some signal from sensor not be on zero no reading. do the belt slip on these engines it could only be one or two tooth if it had will drive only won't go over 5000 revs because it's not get signal from sensor thanks craig

live cam position there is no reading stay on zero that what giving me the code but if the timing was out it would still give some type of reading would it

I mean a usb obd adaptor so you can use multiecuscan. http://www.multiecuscan.net

Probably you're right about the voltage but I'm not sure.

I'm not worried about the belt but this engine has a variator also which can cause problems if you don't follow the correct procedure when you're replacing the belt.

hi thanks for that unfortunately there no way of me know whats gone on in the past so don't really know if they have played with the timing i would hope they would have put a new belt on and this one doesn't look like it has been change in a long time if someone was to look at the time and check it would they know or be able to see if this was wrong? i have put my old ecu back on traced the wires back to ecu the one is pulsing and the other is giving 4.91v cleared code and within a minute code back up p0016 real cam reading still zero it like the sensor not working but is new and have tried two different one i have downloaded multiecuscan but wont connect i cant find the driver for my elm327 (i find it rubbish) so need a bit of time on that on will it test the sensor why do i need it? how hard is it to check the timing my self i have looked but cant find a post on the 1.4 16v is it something i could do or better to take to some one who know what they are doing cheers thanks again craig

So just read a post on here about changing timing belt and you need locking kit and if you get it wrong you kill the engine so anyone around the swansea area with a locking kit that fancies checking/doing the job cheers craig

ok update well to start thanks for all the help(y) to start changing the ecu i did change the ecu fuse box and left my clock in but only problem with that was the mileage was flashing i think because the ecu mileage and the clock mileage was different so i then change the clock and that mileage was flashing as well:doh: (didn't fix my problem anyway)so changed everything back the ecu fuse box and clock to my original set and everything was right no flashing mileage great(y) but didn't fix my problem of code P0016.:bang: so everyone on here was tell me that the timing was out so i have finally bitten the bullet and taken the car into fiat main dealer and have had a new timing belt kit fitted, not a bad price for main dealer £199 kit and fitting and yes you were alright it was the timing:worship: they didn't tell me how much it was out but they did tell me that the timing was out and the code p0016 hasn't come back on yet finger crossed. however me and this car i have now done about 60 miles and i have now got another  code p0340 camshaft sensor pull even more hair out i'll have none left by the time this car has finished with me i have read a post saying that it could be Phonic Wheel Learn which i am going to try tomorrow and that will be it the car running lovley forever again :ROFLMAO: many thanks for all the help Craig(y):worship:

heh told you :)

About the flashing mileage it's because you need a proxy alignment (see my first post here ;) )

Now about P0340...I don't think this could be a phonic wheel issue.

But just to make sure:

Remove the negative terminal from the battery for a minute and connect it back again.

Then:
1. Idle till normal coolant temp (half way)
2. Rev up to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds
3. Let it drop down to idle
4. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds
5. Drop to idle
6. Rev to 5,000rpm hold for 3 seconds
7. Drop to idle

You are done.

For your info this code could be a bad cam sensor (if you have an other one just replace it) / cable problem OR a bad Crank sensor.

yeah i read on here how to ho it but they didn't say hold it over 5k for 3 seconds :bang:
need to do it again if it comes back on its a new sensor (i know some are rubbish ) has come back on yet (y)(y)

thanks for the help Craig
