It starts drives fine then all of a sudden switches off then when i try to strat it it wont start for about 5 mins then starts again it does it intermittently sometimes ok for day or two then it happens three or four times a trip without warning can anyone help

hi faik don't know if you Afrikaans or English but sounds like a similar problem I had. I suggest check your heat gauge when the car cuts out you will probably notice that's its always more or less just as the car goes just above operational temperature . check for blockage in the water pipe going to or coming from the throttle body I would say if there is a blockage it would most probably be in the thin pipe going back to radiator . if there is a blockage one of the sensors on the throttle body cuts out when it gets to hot and the blockage prevents water from circulating so will always cut out more or less the same time

hi Faik,
you can try this: (try this test for free yourself before you go and buy any parts that might not be faulty - I was on the point of buying a TDC sensor myself before I tested - you can do it in 15 minutes)
I found a YouTube link about a guy who is testing the TDC(crankshaft position sensor) - that would cause his Fiat Punto to cut-out when it heated up..and then start again once it cooled down. You can get this part Fiat/Alfa for R785(part number 55189515). (search for 'how to test crankshaft position sensor' on youtube)

possible reason is engine overheating, as said before, please check the coolant temperature, maybe the cooling system has troubles (dead water pump, always closed thermostat, maybe you are running low on antifreeze/water through leakage or other reasons), I recommend checking the whole system, Are there any smoke coming from the engine area when the car stops ?
