Hi
I've just bought a 2007 Fiat Panda multijet. I was concerned that I only got one ignition key from the dealer on the day I collected the car . He said the the seller only gave one key.
On looking through the owners handbook, 2 keys Plus a code card are given as standard. I never got such a card either.

The code card code procedure used for emergency start up 'incase key fails' looks quite horrendous. Looking for flashes on the engine warning light etc. I've never seen such a complex affair in any modern car.

Are key problems common in Fiats of this age? Has anyone had to use the emergency start up procedure?

I'm certainly looking for a key cutter to copy me a spare key.

I would certainly warn anyone buying a used car to ensure 2 sets of keys are provided before they make any agreement to purchase, as keys are quite expensive and loss of your one and only key could be a very expensive loss. Also get car key insurance. (y)

At some point in our lives we've all ben wise after the event. Specially when buying cars.

We should create a 'car byer' checklist for people to check things off on a list and not get too excited by a purchase.

As for the key - I think loads of the cars end up with one key. Cutting a spare is not much use as you need the transponder which controls the immobiliser.

However - after many years and many FIATs I've never had to do a Cozy Powell on the throttle pedal waiting for the lights to correspond. Even with a battery disconnected for days.

I'd try and put it to the back of your mind and start enjoying your 65mpg. Worse thing can and do happen.

Timpsons or whatever will copy you a spare for £40-50 with no paper work, I just took my key there and they cloned it.

It worked great for me, call up 1st to see if they can fiat keys.

Although the manual says it's included, the code cards aren't supplied with the vehicles by request from UK insurers as it would make them (the cars) far too easy to steal.

Not all Timpsons have the facilities to correctly produce Code2 keys so be wary.

Thanks for the reply.

I like the idea of a buyers checklist also its a good idea to ask the car dealer if you can take the owners handbook home overnight to learn about the car before you purchase it :)
