Hello
New here, so hello to everyone !!
My girlfriend has 2009 multipla multijet and its had the engine control light come on recently.
Garage ran diagnostic and said code pointed to egr valve. My question is, how accurate are these codes e.g. Is it 99% certainty that egr is the faulty component ?
Many thanks. Dom

more like 45% accurate,

tell us what code(s) it was showing,
look in the Multi section.. bottom of homepage,

garage says it was p041 code or something like that , he didn't write it down so couldn't remember exactly ?!!!
Could he mean P0401 ?! o_O

Fault codes by themselves never say a particular component is faulty.

A fault code will point you in the direction of the problem, then you or your garage will need to carry out further diagnosis.
.

Thats interesting !
So for them to say "this is the fault code and therefore we need to replace your egr valve" isn't strictly true or accurate ?!

Also want to add that the garage said they had cleaned egr valve, but light came on in dash an hour later.
I spent good part of saturday afternoon removing and cleaning valve myself. Loads of crud on engine side of the 90° corrugated pipe ( how thorough was your clean Mr garage man )?!!
Anyway, garage have reset dash light, am hoping it stays off now !!
Oh yes, fyi, dealership (not garage mentioned above) wanted £400 for new valve and £300 to fit it !! Can you believe that ?!!!!

Correct.... The common EGR codes are listed below. None of them say you need a new EGR valve.

Flow malfunction, insufficient and excssive could mean you need a new valve but could also mean the valve is stuck and just needs cleaning.

Circuit malfunction and range/performance could mean you need a new valve, but could also mean there's a wiring fault in the circuit.

Unfortunately, some garages start by fitting a new component, then realising the problem is still there, go on to rectify the circuit fault, which could be just a loose or corroded connector. Guess who pays for the new but unnecessary component.

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction
P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
P0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
P0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction
P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance

Thanks for those codes and meaning, could come in handy !

Re: EGR Valve

One thing is for sure, something has made the engine management light come on and the code you are giving indicates your EGR valve is at fault. My guess is that it is gummed up with carbon deposits. These things suffer badly even with low mileages and needs a good clean on the basis it will do no harm if it is defective. I am not sure whether you are planning to do this work yourself or you are supporting your girlfriend following a "we need to fit a new EGR valve and it is going to cost you the equivalent of Germany's GDP" conversation with the dealer and you are having a search to see what options she has. This job is an easy one to do and is photographically outlined on various posts within this forum but it is a mucky job and will take some time to get it clean. There is a chance that it is defective and cannot be repaired but a 2009 model without a squillion miles on the clock should be worth a good clean as a start point. The point is getting a dealer to do this will cost in technician charges and these may come close to the cost of a new one. Technicians these days tend not to like cleaning stuff up because if it ends up being defective they not only lose their bonus but the dealer loses the ability to charge you for the clean if he then has to fit a new valve. Unless you are prepared to get your [or her] hands dirty then you are limiting your options I would guess.
I hope this helps.

Yes, I am sorry about that, I only read the first and last posts properly and went into print prior to realising I had missed your cleaning exercise completely. I would be very surprised if your sterling work did not fix it - especially if the light has stayed off so far. By the way, if you had not had the light reset by the dealer it would probably have gone off under its own steam once you had fixed it as it looks for defects every time you cycle the engine [start and run it for a reasonable period] so when there is no defect present after a few cycles it will extinguish itself. Just for your information.
I do hope your girlfriend showed her appreciation in the time honoured way for saving her £700.00. i.e. use it for justification to go out shopping as she was £700 up on the deal. [I do hope you weren't thinking I was meaning something else?].

Lol, its work in progress !
I cleaned valve saturday, and it had to be reset by garage this morning, so not sure if I've solved it or not re. 'the light should go off itself'.

Hi,
not sure how much they are charging you for code reading/resetting ,

BUT for less than £20 you can have your own box of tricks,
that does work eves + weekends..!!;)

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Which box of tricks would work with multipla ? If its around £20 mark its probably not a bad investment. P.S. They reset it for free this morning !

Hi,
all passenger cars from 2000 use a system called OBD 2( on board diagnostics-2nd edition)

there are a HUGE range of products ..
ranging from under a tenner to hundreds ( even thousands).

I purchased a decent enough box for @£40 , BUT does ENGINE work only,
so no ABS, PAS, Airbag ,etc things:eek:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vgate-Sca...iagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item19da58b2e1

as the next step ( 2 years later + wiser:rolleyes:) I've spent @ £40 on leads for my laptop, and use the FREE version of Multi ECU Scan,

MES is a Fiat/ Alfa specific software than can do virtually everything the dealer kit does, :worship:
I used it to diagnose and fix an airbag fault on my Panda,

so 1 job paid for the leads..!!,(y)
