Hi, and welcome to FF
common 'ish fault on modern generation of vehicles,
the operating rod runs in a poly / plastic bush.. when it's worn oval it CAN drop off the end of the rod,
I normally get wipers halfway up screen then turn off ign..( easiest access),
then drop the operating link arm back onto the rod.. often this will sit in place for weeks..,
however a cable-tie in there loosely will help support it,
Ebay sellers / AA / RAC men also do a sprung metal clip that goes on the end of the rod to it cannot drop off,
Till I got rid of it second one did it as well repaired that with a small rose joint & some engineering.
It is an easy job to remove whole linkage mechanism repaired a mates in emergency with aircraft locking wire, as said temp job! but the cheapskate has been using them for over 12 months, says he will change links when it fails again.
If you do change linkage remember to strip clean & re grease spindles.
