Hi,

New to the forum so thought I would say Hello. I have inherited the family 1997 Cinquecento Sporting after my son and my wife ran it.

I decided to keep it rather than scrap it and see what could be done to bring it back to life as a fun runabout.

So far it has had Apex suspension and springs fitted; 14" Outlaw Deception Alloys; new exhaust; new badging; Seicento Sporting seats front and rear (Grey with Red check); 2 new doors and a bonnet; top strut brace and Powerflex bushes front and rear.

A good T-Cut and polish with Autoglym using a rotary polisher to put the shine back.

I then decided it needed a bit more go :D so I have bought a complete 2001 Punto Sporting 1.2 16V with the 6 speed box to cannibalise.

Thats when I realised I needed to join the forums to take advantage of all the threads that have been posted and ask advice of the other members.

Once I get my photos uploaded I will post some of the car as it is before commencing the engine change. Guess thats all for now.:)

Lots of 16v conversions on here!

Very true and some of us have also done the 6 speed box too ! Looking forward to the pics.

Are you going to run the fly by wire throttle or change it to cable ?

Hi,

Back from an extended holiday :) and lots of work to catch up with . Thanks for all the links and info which I will now peruse to see which is the best way to go. I will also get around to loading the photos in the next few days.

Hi,

The Punto I have is a 2001 Sporting pre-facelift, will the engine and gearbox simply drop in in place of the Cinquecento lump? I guess the engine mountings will need altering. I have started to go through the various threads and it seems the major problems occur with the wiring not the nuts and bolts.

essentially yes, use the cinq mounts - drivers side needs bit cutting off. And trim a headlight bolt so it doesn't chew up the timing belt and thats about it as far as i know to actually get the thing in the engine bay.
There is some bits that need fiddling but actually bolting it in the car is the easy bit yes.

Almost. Use the Cinq mounts -- the driver's side one will need the attention of a grinder, but there are details here.

It'll be easier to use the Cinq Sporting gearbox (use the 16v flywheel and clutch) otherwise you'll need to swap the cups over and etc. There's probably nothing to be gained by using the 6 speed box.

AFAIK, according to http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ , in case of mk.1 Punto anyway, the 6th is just a tall 'overdrive' added to essentially the same set of ratios as the 5sp. That is, the 6sp's 5th gives about same road speed as the 5sp's 5th. So the 6sp is not a 'close ratio' box.

Having said that, the only difference (apart from that 'overdrive' if that's what you want) is that only some of the 6sps (04-07 era Stilo, Bravo, GrandePunto) 6sps have the same 3.65 5th of the mk.1 Punto; other 6sps (Punto mk.2B, Idea, Panda 100) have 3.75 5ths, i.e a shade wider away from 4th.

So the latter 6sps wd be worse at top end (short of Mway cruising) than retaining the 5sp.

Unlike the mk.1 5sp, the Punto mk.2/2B 5sp is horrible (and luckily AFAIK not found in any other Fiat) - its 5th gives similar road speed to the mk.2B's 6sp, so all its ratios are higher and wider. In that sense, the mk.2/2B 6sp is 'closer ratio' than the mk.2/2B 5sp. No wonder the mk.2/2B is such a pudding - along with strangulated top end.

Hi, thanks for all the replies (y). Very informative.

Unfortunately, not much progress as last week we had to have our pet moggy of 17 years put down  which rather put a damper on things .

I will make a determined effort to get the photographs uploaded this weekend.
