new to fiat. as of today.

wife is from this country (turkey) but my turkish is 30%. i speak english.

picked up new car from dealer, tried to iron out some tech engine questions, the language was the problem, wife didnt know how to translate tech stuff:

we have the automatic transmission 1,3 diesel model. my question is: is there a different automatic transmission fluid for the transmission? or, does it use the the same oil as the motor?

the turkish tech's seemed to say that the engine oil fed EVERYTHING, including the tranny. very strange to me as i come from VW diesel and they have DSG with 2 different fluids for engine/tranny. like most cars. past and present.

the question i was asking was simply: where to i check for the auto transmission fluid level?

any help would be appreciated. thx to all.

ned

the new car did come with a manual...it is in turkish.

i downloaded some older versions (2009-2010), they both say fiat will service it, dont worry about.

i am trying to get my question answered, it is this: 1) does anyone know what kind of fluid the 1.3 diesel auto tranny uses? 2) where it is refilled/levels checked?

again, the turkish tech say "the only oil in the engine is the motor oil". i find this hard to believe...that the auto tranny uses the same oil/filter.

thanks for the help.

Hi nedro018,
Welcome to the wonderful world of the 'Qubist', hope you enjoy your new car, and indeed this forum.

As a point of interest, I take it you are aware that the gearbox you refer to is in fact a manual gearbox, but with the clutch operated by the onboard computer system ?

Have checked in my service book, and even going right forward to like 80,000 the gearbox oil is not listed for either checking, or changing.

Someone else on here will have the answer no doubt, so I will be looking out for it as well.

Cheers Qube O.

qube o,

many thanks. this is a 2013 model so im not trying to do any service, just trying to understand the "access points" for all of the service areas...the fluids, the filters, etc.

and ive got it all figured out. except for the automatic transmission fluid part...where is the filter(if any)? where/what fluid does it use(if any)? how is it changed?

does anyone know? i am trying to understand a new car's design, a new car which i just bought. so please, no answers like RTFM or take it to fiat service.

the FIAT SERVICE HERE said, the auto tranny oil and the engine oil (and engine oil filter) are the same. i find this very hard to believe. in any engine, with any car Co. im coming to fiat from VW diesel and they used 2 fluids for tranny and engine.

the FIAT MANUAL SAID, take it to fiat service.

im sorry to be direct but this is a really simple question (yet from technical angle) im trying ask as a newbie in this forum: for the fiat 1.3 diesel 5 speed automatic - :

1) what transmission fluid (type/spec) is used?
2) where is it serviced from?
3) is there a filter or not?

thanks for all

Is not like the old auto gearbox u used to get u have a car with a cluch like man gearboxs but the dual logic gearbox has a computer that changes the gears making it an auto if u understand that that the new tech of these qubo wonderful cars there is no need for auto gearbox oil in the auto dual logic qubos .. but yes engine oil yes and pas steering oil .. hope this has been some help to u or others if im wrong anyone is welcome to put me or this right.

thks dave,

yes i think understand. the VW used dual clutch system. it was "auto and manual" modes as well, but the fluid was different from normal mineral/synthetic oil.

i believe, what you are saying, is that the fiat auto tranny is "semi automatic", and, as such, it uses regular engine oil for the gears portion (not dry clutch portion)...like a regular manual tranny?

i DO understand the difference between a semi + fully automatic tranny...im simply trying to figure out where the oil goes for each...into the engine...and...into the tranny. _is it the same place_? in the engine oil hole? thats what they're telling me here.

the old manual trannys i used to drive used a heavier weight oil than did the engine oil. maybe technology has changed this. i dont recall the engine and the tranny sharing the same oil + filter.

im certain there is a fiat service tech in this group who can answer this. thanks!

Can't see why you are worrying about it. Its about every 8 years in need changing and I don't think the check is on the standard maintenence.

So, its a standard fiat manual gearbox with hydraulic actuators. This fill/level screw is on the front face about two thirds of the way up the gearbox and the drain screw is near the rearmost point of the box on the bottom. Can't remember the sizes. I am sure in takes standard SAE manual transmission oil (80 or 90) because essentially that's what it is.

There will also be some hydraulic oil in the duologic system and I don't have a clue about that other than again I don't think there will be any reason to look at it unless it all ends up on your driveway one day.

Google fiat punto gearbox oil change if you want to see plenty of diagrams and images about what to do.

any one no where to put the little box for the reversing aids does it go in the rear light cluster?

If you mean the reversing warning bleeper box?...................mine is tucked into the nearside(left) rear light lens access panel.

I am talking about the IDEA, but may well be the same for the QUBO/FIORINO.

The answer for NEDRO 018 question , seems to be simple IMHO, the gear box oil
does not need changing for the normal life of the car..If it does need topping up OR changing, then as Ivantate says, its a standard grade 80 or 90 EP oil.which he may never need to purchase.!!!!
