Hi, please can somebody confirm how many years warrenty my above car has? I brought it new on September 1st 2008! It has been in the dealers now for over 6 weeks and they now state it my need a new engine! Initially they though the problem had been solved but the oil level keeps raising and after many checks they need to strip the engine, I think they have ruled out the DPS!

Your car's not under warranty anymore and it's quite funny that you have to ask on a forum about something like this.

The engine on these cars doesn't die on its own if it's maintained properly, did the dealer tell you what is the cause of the problem?

Thanks for your reply! I thought it was 5 years! The dealer does not know. The car has less than 34k on the clock and was serviced last year at the dealers we brought it from! I had been experiencing problems which I have read about regarding the DPS, the dealers have had it last year and reported no problems, about 6 weeks ago it juddered on the motorway and when I stopped it ran on its on when I switched the ignition off!

The dealer got it going replacing the coolant and the oil took it for a test run and said it was ok! Then they discovered that the oil level was rising! They than checked the injectors which were not to bad and did not want changing at this time!
Again they took it for another test run and it ran great, however the oil level keeps raising and they stated it could be the DPS with a bill of 3k!

Since then they have been in contact with Fiat and they have been telling what tests to do, so after 2 weeks they have stated that they need to strip the engine again, t
And a new engine is most likely!

I can't see any fault with the engine causing an increase in oil level. It'll be either HG failure, or more likely so fault with the DPF regen cycles causing oil level increase.

Car engines aren't rocket science, if your dealer doesn't know what's worng then it's about time you get angry and take the car to another garage.

if it's HG failure (head gasket) then it's very easy to find out, the coolant would look like milk coffe but that's a very rare fault on a modern diesel engine.

If you pull the oil stick right after you drove the car it's perfectly normal to have the oil level look way above the maximum level. Just saying in case you or the geniuses in your dealership didn't know...

Thanks for the advice, I know that it would raise, but I have not got the car to check, however they say fiat have looked at the car and the pistons may not be working at full capacity and the bore may have gone! You could be right move to another garage !

I am almost certain your warranty is Five years. I got mine in Marich 2008 just before the five year warranty came in.

You need to check as they only had 5 year warranties if they were purchased new with no major discount.

from what you describe the car has been burning oil so the level must have been immensely high or an oil seal has failed somewhere, if your garage have reset the oil degradation counter and not changed the oil after multiple failed regens on the DPF then it could be your car has revved itself to death, did you stall the car after removing the key or let it rev until it cut out?

The mechanic that came out to it checked it over and started it?
Like I said before the garage have had it running and they say it runs ok, but the oil level keeps rising! They say diesel is getting into the oil?

yes that's is why the oil level is apparantly rising

will be an internal seal failure, usually the oil control rings on pistons

your engine is lunched i am afraid and Fiat should replace it for you free of charge unless the maintenance schedule has been missed

TBH OP is lucky the engine didn't seize or explode with run on.

Yes the car drives but oil level rises they say it will drive approx 100 miles and could the same again!!

test drive will not show anything i am afraid, it will drive normally

needs to go on a dyno to check power and emissions if they like but your description of runaway should tell them all they need
also ecu should have logged fault codes

whatever you do make it clear that you dont want car back without a new engine
