I have a 2007 Model Grande Punto 1.2 sport 5 door. I loved the car the first time , I saw it and it gave me hassle free service for 5 years. Just last week I had a problem. While driving 120km on Free way:D I suddenly got this burning smell emanating from the engine compartment. I immediately stopped and inspected. I found nothing. I checked the computer box. No signs of melting or fire. I inspected all the wiring from the alternator to the starter. Nothing. I carried on driving. The next day my battery was dead. I placed it on charge and swopped batteries and drove without a problem. The next day that battery was dead. I took multi-meter and saw that the alternator was not charging. I contacted Fiat and they told me to bring it in. I am short with cash so I phoned around and got an alternator. I replaced it and the charging was above 15v. I am very concerned as this is way past the required 14v regulation I am use to. The car charges now without a problem the battery has to be disconnected every night still otherwise battery dead the next day. Today I had a problem the battery fully charged but the instrument panel switches on but the car don't want to start. When I try starting the computer box relay make's funny noises. Is their any suggestions?? :worship:I am mechinical and electric clue up but this is mind boggling. I swapped around relay's but I still get the same error noise like a buzzer sound from the relay's :bang:

15v is too high, max you should get 14.5v-14.7v,was that on tick over or rev test,if battery was faulty you can get higher readings try swapping battery and rechecking, maybe faulty altenator, battery earth to body to engine ok?,try a spare jump lead from - to engine also.(y)

Hi thanks for the post But I received the same reading on both batteries. That was while the car was still idling.

The Computer box still looks brand new not a sign of rust or moisture.

Is it not there where the relays are situated in. I thought that is the computer box.

Something is constantly draining my battery. Now it does'nt even want to go on??

I will explain again. The alternator is Pushing out 16.4V even when i changed the battery. If I do not take the terminal off the Battery at night the battery goes dead the next morning. When I test the multi meter the battery is 6v. I even placed a Bigger battery 652. Still the same result. The car electronics have gone hay wire. When I tried starting it with a charged battery. The Instrument panel gauge's jumps up and down and on off when I try starting the engine. But it doesn't start the engine. What I hear is a real loud buzzing sound coming from the Fuse box. From one relay. When I remove the relay the instrument panel comes back to normal. I try starting it without the relay, nothing happens no instruments come on. I swap and change the relay still with the same results. I leave it for a day and the next morning when I replace the terminal it starts first time. But when switch it off the same things happen again. I contacted the agents that sold the alternator to replace the alternator. I have also asked them what would happen if there is a spike. They told me that it, would not lead to this kind of problem. The battery still drains, is there any suggestions. Thanks in advance for the assist:)

recheck battery in the meter you use,i got fooled once,16.4 is way too high, try a jump cable from-to body and engine to see if it changes, probable chance cooked relay, you would need to get an amp meter to connect between + pos terminal and lead, faulty altenators can also cause a battery drain and yours sounds like a big one.
