Just been told that the Fiat Multipla gearbox for the 1.9 diesel is making srtrange noises especially when in reverse. Garage ( non fiat specailaist) suggests referring to a gearbox consultant for a new gearbox i.e. £500 plus labour plus VAT. Garage was advising me that it is not possible to recondition the multipla gearbox as there are so few around - is this right?

Has anyone else had similar problems and found another way round?

Situation is urgent as we plan to pull a caravan through Europe between Aug 13 and 24 08!

that box is used on dozens of cars with the 1.9JTD engine; almost every fiat and most alfas and even vauxhalls and saabs, so reconditioning should be easy because parts will be readily available.
