Just bought my first Fiat in 25 years of driving... a low mileage super condition 97 Cinquecento S which is hopefully going to help stave off the worst effects of the UK 'credit crunch' by reducing the cost of my daily commute from the currently laughable 24 mpg endured in my SAAB 9000. The cinq has always reminded me, in spirit and execution, of the 2CV I drove for four or fve years - my petrol head-ism has always tended to be of the two-wheeled variety with cars being strictly transport.

Why an S and not an SX or a Sporting? - because there is less to go wrong. My experiance with electrics and italian motorcycles (and the odd Alfa over the years) has convinced me that old italian electrics often = no electrics at all! I'm hoping Fix It Again Tomorrow will not be my mantra.

I'm based in Horsham West Sussex in the UK and my plans for the car include:-

Figuring out why the wipers go from intermittent to full on, on their own, without me touching the stalk/switch.
Fitting a radio/CD and swapping the speakers (the original radio/cassette wiring has been attacked by wire cutters and insulating tape - yuck!)
Fitting a water temparature gauge to augment the "Oh Sh!t" dashboard light
Possibly fitting a rev counter so I can exhibit at least a small degree of mechanical sympathy
Putting a full length fabric sun roof in for the summer months

Anyone want to encourage me or put me off any particular step....?

Regards to all

Greg Collins

Hello and welcome!

Figuring out why the wipers go from intermittent to full on, on their own, without me touching the stalk/switch.

I had this problem, turned out to be a fecked motor. £20 jobby from scrappy (that came with linkage too)(y)
