General wot these really like ?

Petrol is the same engine as the Bravo/Brava 1.6 so it does struggle with the weight of the car,as shown below

Model 0-60 BHP Top Speed MPG Insurance Gp
Petrol 1.6 ELX 12.2 103 106 32 9
JTD (115) ELX 11.8 109 109 44 8

Taken from http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/carreviews/review.aspx?model_id=231&page=1

Plus speak to Nige for a JTD conversion to 155BHP under 10 second 0-60

Look at the link to the buyers guide as well !!

Why? A JTD is ideal in a vehicle this size - and with a remap as well

Then again, I drive a diesel and petrol on a regular basis, so get used to the characteristics of both [edit - none of which are multiplas]

call me old fashioned, but diesels stink!! no thats not real reason,im a mechanic with bikes and understand all petrol engine faults etc ,but dont have a clue when it comes to diesels.better the devil you know if you know what i mean.

Can't comment on the Multipla, but my folks both have JTD's (Bravo & Stilo MW) and when i'm following them in my 1.6 16V Stilo I dont half have to work the gears and hang the revs out to keep up (with the Bravo up the Valley round Merthyr even, quite embarrassing  ) Think that extra weight of Multipla & 1.6 16V petrol engine would have you asking 2nd class passengers (kids in the back) to get out and push when faced with a half decent hill :D Fuel economy also dips quickly when you work the 1.6 petrol hard

got a mk2 diesel ( 04) and its brill get 40-45 mpg with full load :) get a wave from other owners and strange looks from non multi owners. park it in a carpark and by the time you come back there is another one next to it or close by .sit slighty higher than a car so can see over them ,air con is good ,cd player is crap ..jumps like hell ( new one coming in jan sales ) boot is smallish but slide back seats forward and it doubles in size .if i start it up without dipping the clutch more often then not the engine check light comes on and wont go off so either a trip to the garage to get it reset or take out the relays wait 5 mins and put them back in ( garage doesn`t know why it does that ).............on the whole i`m very happy with my multi :) :D :) :D :) :D

My ex g/f mate had a 1.6 petrol and it felt slower than the sei with poor consumption only getting around 30mpg

It was on a W or X-plate so that is one of the early ones i think

The old sterotypes of diesel are gone :D

yeah you really have to go for the diesel, i had one last summer, and it's a hoot to drive, and doesn't feel sluggish, the petrol is a dead duck

Driven like an angel I can get low 50's (mpg - per computer and calculated on figures between tank brims) (y) when on a mission have glanced at speedo on M5 by Taunton and seen a speedo indicated 125  lack of torque v's JTD shines through though with full loads and or big hills

I bought a Multipla in november for the christmas trips, carting family around etc.. and to see what they were really like. An X reg 1600 with 90000 miles and a snapped cam-belt. 1 low mileage bravo engine later and it runs like a dream. (what a way to use up holiday at the end of the year!!)

I drive a MG ZR diesel normally and the multipla is smoother, quieter and lighter to drive!!

Have done about 1000 miles in it so far and its great, running around and doing 70ish on the motorway it returns 33-35mpg (27-29 on the computer).
Push over 70 the aerodynamics with hit the mpg (not rich enough to find out how badly). Unladen it is more than quick enough and picks up from 20mph in 5th gear and does about 3600rpm at 70mph.
Its also nice to have a heater that warms up quickly in the current weather conditions.
With a full compliment of passengers (no luggage) it does slow it down a bit but if its infrequent I guess its not too much of a problem.

I havent tried a diesel but would personally consider it over the petrol due to the fuel costs, but the purchase price for the petrols is lower and if you prefer them it will balance out.

where abouts in pontefract are you from because thats where i am from. I will look out for you and your multipla :)

I bought a 52 reg diesel multipla in december 05. I love the room and the car goes really well. This is the first diesel I have had in 35 years driving and I would not have a petrol multi.I am still getting used to the car as it is different but be brave and go for it! My 11 month old grandson loves it!
