Hi all,

Im from the UK but currently in France heading towards Italy and my second generation Multi has started to leak copious quantities of diesel from somewhere close to the UFI filter housing.

Ive just removed the filter housing unit from the car. Not that clear where the diesel is / was leaking from. In addition to the two fuel connection higher up, there is a plastic boss in the housing pointing downwards, that had nothing on it but looks like it could be used as some type of return or overflow. There was diesel around the electrical connector housing on the base of the unit also.

Am I correct in thinking it is possible to replace the filter element on the inside of the UFI housing, if I can manage to undo the screw top? Or is this a 'replace the whole UFI unit only' kind of thing?

Any help appreciated, particularly if anyone has any experience of dripping diesel in this area?? Is this likely to be happening if the filter is overdue for replacement?

Many thanks,

If it is plastic housing with screw on retaining ring then it contains a replaceable paper filter element.

An over due filter change will not cause a leak.

A housing that has had over tightened ring will distort and leak.

There may be a special tool to tighten the ring and a special tool to hold the housing in a vice while tightening.

Clean everything well , reassemble and identify where leak is coming from.
The in tank pump runs for a few seconds when key turned to position 2 so you don't necessarily have to have engine running to find the leak.

Good luck

Be very careful with the plastic pipes that connect to filter housing they can break easily which would cause a bigger more expensive problem.

Is it possible that the leak is very small but due to long journey has resulted in a build up of leaked diesel?

There is a little stub at bottom of housing for draining off water it doesnt have a tube connected to it.

I don't think you can fix your problem at the side of the road.

If you can get to Italy you stand a chance of finding a garage that has experience of this problem with the plastic filter housings.
Solution appears to be replace the housing complete.
The new housing should come with a filter fitted , correctly tightened and ready to fit.

Bon chance

Hi Jack,

Many thanks for the detailed replies.

I think your reasoning is correct, replacing the whole unit is the way forward...even if Im never completely happy being at the mercy of OE garages (and prices)...

When googling UFI filters to see how the water drain works one of the patent search results indicates that (in theory) the water separation circuit runs with the key in an 'ignition on' / initial fuel pump run position....and I know I've sat with the key in this position for a at least minute or two a couple of times on this trip....whether diesel is expelled from the little stubby tube on the filter housing too during this process and in what quantity I don't know..

Thanks again,

Thanks for the help and suggestions. Dealer wanted 210 Euro for a new filter, for me to fit myself....although the mechanic was also kind enough to give me directions to a local breaker's yard to help me source a cheaper alternative. Unfortunately they didn't have a Multi of the same year there, so I paid the ransom and secured a new filter....fortunately this solved the issue. Difficult to say, but I think the filter unit was actually leaking from the electrical connector area in its base.

Thanks again..
