Going in again for another crankshalft pulley got the last one done under warranty five months gone again.

Perhaps the pulley is the victim.

The alternators on these have a freewheeling pulley that seizes. Usual result is a cracked alternator housing, but a strained crank pulley might be caused by this. Similarly, anything the belt drives could give issues if it resists, so check all driven pulleys and their rotating units, such as aircon pump, etc.

I will add that some parts are OLD STOCK

and the rubber could be well past its best when you buy it..

Ive fitted replacement that were as old as the factory build

1ST Lasted 14 years.. 2nd lasted 24 months ( different application.. but aged 'rubberware' still the issue)

I just took delivery of a crankshaft pulley to sort out that familiar rattle.
Not quite sure how 'new' the part is but it don't look old.
How do you know if the part is N.O.S? (new old stock)?
I was going to get my old un on the bench and true it up then mig it, that'd stop it rattling (y)
Any thoughts?

The rubber is there as a vibration damper. Making it solid removes that, and the vibration will affect other parts, possibly leading to a more expensive failure later. It is there for a reason.

I'm still thinking that the pulley is a victim here, not the cause of the problem. The original lasted many years. Replacements last a few months. It is logical to assume the replacement is poor quality. But, just because the original lasted many years does not mean that the pulley is the problem. The cause could have appeared a few months before the original pulley gave up.

Spose it couldn't be as simple as manufacturing techniques?

Looking at the 'old' un, it looks like it's been vulcanised in place, were the 'noo' un looks like it's been injection moulded (like stiffish).
Composition feels different too, 'old' un feels more elastic, 'noo' un feels more 'blocky', sort of plasticky
I'd stick my neck out as far as to call them 'definitely after market', I'd also say the amount of elastic 'filler' between the inner and outter is greater on the new one by a factor of 2.
Anyway, I'll bang em on shortly, it's about time it had another service, it hasn't had one since the last one

Edit: Must add: I think I've been sort of lucky, this is on Bug #6 and this is only the 2nd time I have had to change one the these (not counting the bug I scrapped, that's 6 on the road) and it looks awfully like this bug will have difficulties next text (July '21) definitely looking worse for wear rust wise round her R Send (shudda kept the silver one, was very clean undersides) Oh hum.

Just for future reference, what make is the new pulley?

If it's a stiffer rubber, it sounds as though they've compensated by making it a lot wider than the original. Kind of makes sense. Whether it makes it any more durable? Well, you'll be the guinea pig :D

Hello Mucka's and Muckeressis,

Regardin the work on 'Ole Blue', I haven't quite got round to finding me 'ammer un chizul' yet - that's the problem with getting 'mature' you tend to not remember things, which is sometimes a benefit, though I can't think of one at the moment.

I had intended to get crackin on the long overdue service and other little jobs that keep creeping up and quietly joinin the list, without even an invitation.

I've been kept a bit busy with other stuff - in fact, so busy I wanna know where my 'idle retirement' has gone, I was told 'you're gonna be bored stiff' after you retire, what with all that dead time on your hands an nothin to do but twiddle ya thumbs...

Seems to me I've missed out somewhere, or I've been short changed at least, I don't have time to find enough hours in the day to do all I want.

Anyway, I should find time this week to sort the Ole Girl out. I'll give you a run down on progress, as and when. Then I'll let y'all know what I think of these 'new' pulleys, if I remember correctly, that last 'new' one started screeching again after only 2 or 3 days, so I don't know what to think, the old pulley was a goner for sure, but I'd have thought the new one might have lasted a big longer.

Anyway, later.
George

P/S Sorry WMF: I haven't seen a name on the new pulley mate, which is a bit disturbing. Could it be P.R.C. quality? If so I'd better find another P.D.Q.
