Hi all, new here.

Had our Multipla 18 months and gear selection has never been great, and often reverse needs a second attempt to find it. It is the same with the engine on or off.

I've read about lubricating the gear cables from both ends, but what the is the best stuff to use?

Maybe WD-40 to free them up then followed by spray grease or 3-in1 oil? Or ordinary engine oil? I'm assuming that something heavier than WD-40 is better for the longer term.

And whilst I'm at it I may as well do the clutch pivot too, again, what's the best stuff for the long term?

Any thoughts appreciated:worship:

Thanks!

I always lube the cables with WD40 silicon spray and then apply waterproof grease at each end. Ditto hand brake cables. New cables are nylon shathed so should not really need much but silicon is probably the best fro this. What you want is to ensure that water is displaced and excluded. I get this from Halfords and it has a yellow top rather than red.

I've always used DUCK OIL.
Brilliant stuff - I don't use WD40 for anything to do with lubrication because it is NOT a lubricant, it's a release agent and not a brilliant one at that.
You can buy duck oil online easily enough -
it may not appear cheap (cos they quack ) but it is brilliant.
It won't damage nylons or plastics so it's safe to use anywhere and it stays where you put it (WD evaporates in a day or two = rusty parts again soon)
My opinion only - you choose what you can afford, personally I've never bought anything better.

Well I opted for Duck Oil, it has been very good for many things I admit, and worked very well on the gear cables at first, but now they are back to how they were. I should have added some grease around then ends, I do have some waterpump grease somewhere.

I think I will have another go with the Duck Oil on the ables along with adding the grease this time and hope that this lasts a lot longer this time. If not, then I'll give the silicon spray a try.

Like any sort of maintenance, it needs follow ups to keep it at it's best. I normally like to splash the duck oil around the cables and ball joints about every 3 or 4 months or so. It's a good move to give the underside a good jet washing just before the onset of winter, let it dry out for a day or two then go nuts with the duck oil, don't forget to get some in your box sections and give the inside of the doors a spraying too. In fact, anywhere you think water can collect. It's a messy job but well worth the time taken. You might consider buying one of those spray lances (they have multiple spray holes in the tip) they can get a fine spray into so many places. I believe they are available on fleabay, maybe Amoozun might flog em too.
Cheers George

Multiblob:

If you have any hassle getting lube into any cables try the old bikers trick:

One end of your cable needs to be free to do this:

Get some plasticine (kiddies play dough might do) work it till pliable, form it round the end of the cable (on the outer sheath) and make a trumpet so that you can pour some of your preferred lube into it, hang it up over night and it will slowly creep down the cable - if you like using silicon spray, get a small piece of rag and cover the sprayer head so that it doesn't form a mist when sprayed, as it forms a drip, let it run into your trumpet and it'll do the same job.
