My '99 1.6 ELX is lively enough for town work but very low-geared on the motorway. It feels as if a 6th gear would work fine, particularly here in the hill-free Netherlands.
Does anyone know if this can be done and a suitable donor 'box?

Unfortunately the thread is pretty much trashed because the images have gone AWOL, but I think the videos may still work:

This was an amazing project (and a hell of a lot of work). It might be worth paying a visit to the Polish Multipla forum as the images may still be hosted there. As for the OP's question - I would have thought the 1.6 would struggle to pull the high gearing in a 6 speed 'box.

I would have thought it will make little difference in the overall scheme of things if the 'donor' car has a running engine or not. The petrol roundnose Multiplas are getting quite rare on UK roads now, so it's more a case of finding a car with a sound body, trim etc. Whether the engine is a runner or not would be irrelevant. Check the numbers on the howmanyleft site to get an idea of the number of cars still available.

You're right, and the "blown engine" is more idealistic than realistic. Will keep a look out.

I have a 1.6 16v old model from 2004 with custom leather interior and supercharger conversion to around 140 bhp. The engine is running fine but gearbox blown and very costly repair. Given I have more than enough power I would really like to add a 6 speed box. I heard rumours that Doblo and Stilo 1.2 boxes might work. Any thoughts (or interest to buy the car) ?

I had similar thoughts with my 1.6 ELX, nice little runabout, but it was always screaming for another cog.
Finally let it got to a young lady as a first car - she's still got it! and loves it.
Having moved to diesel never looked back.

aquamarine - this one looks as though it might be of interest to you:

Although it says it's an import, as best as I can tell from the photo, it looks as though it's RHD. It's from that period when they was a fad for ordering cars as a 'grey' import as they could be bought from European dealerships cheaper than those in the UK, even if you ordered a UK-spec car.

Whatever - if you want a Mk1 petrol, you're not going to find one with lower mileage, and one owner too.

Just saw this on the bay too. I have asked for more details, it is in Surrey.

I bought a MK1 Astra GTE when I lived down there many years ago that was imported and RHD

Thank you!

Technically.. these were termed 'parallel imports'

Grey were Japanese home market mainly..
Rhd.. but needed rear fog lights.etc to meet uk regs :(

The parallels were factory built uk models.. just supplied via a mainland europe dealer. ;)
Denmark offered great savings when I considered doing this :)

The gearbox on the petrol 1.6 is different to the stilo.
I'm looking to find a 6 speeder for my diesel jtd alfa has been mentioned but the boxes are made from chocolate ?
