General Project: Double Ugly

Mines the daily work commute car now and other local trips, Saab only generally used at weekends and for long trips. Just replaced all the stereo speakers so the music is much better, just need to sort the thermostat, below par running and the bloody dash telling me there's a door open when there isn't. The steering feels very light unless its my budget Lansail(?) tyres but it handles ok.

Been doing my thermostat the last few days. Spent about 4 hours in total. Didn't take many pics I'm afraid but the main pain in the arse was the EGR cooler bracket which is attached to the bottom thermostat bolt. The other bracket for the cooler is attached with two bolts on the rear of the head one accessible, one not. While the egr pipes were off I found a misplaced gasket. All looked very clean though. 20181229_181635.jpeg20181229_181645.jpeg

Speakers is another thing on the list. Do you know what size the rear ones are? The grills look too small for 6", 4" maybe?

2 bars. 100% improvement but still crap. Heater is warmer but not really hot. Not sure if i can be arsed to change it all again or spend another £80 on a new thermostat so could either do the Renault 5 thermostat in the top hose thing or the winter muff.20181230_131302.jpeg

I got JBL speakers for the front off Ebay - think they were 6.5 inch diameter and some Alpine ones for rear - think the are 7 x 5 inch, I cut the middles out of the originals and used the remaining frame to mount and use as a water guard, i'm on France till 3rd but will confirm speaker sizes when I get home. You also have to crimp on new terminals making sure you get all the polarities the same, sounds crap otherwise. Renault 5 inline thermostat for me, having done an Alfa JTD i'm not going through all that again unless I have to.

There was an extra connector on the passenger front speaker, no idea what it does, I just left it disconnected and everything works, there are tweeters in the windscreen trims!!

Espace thermostat in my top hose has done the trick for almost two years now. It's a tight squeeze to get in and I even bought a new top hose just in case I damaged the old one.
I saw your post about the Renault thermostat and even saw a youtube video suggesting the same. Anyone else considering a fix for a jammed open thermostat should probably try that method instead.

Stuck on the 16" coupe wheels, though only on the rear.

Just need to do a little bit of refurb on 2 other wheels and get some tyres then I can do the fronts too!20190102_095811.jpeg20190102_100248.jpeg20190102_100658.jpeg20190102_100945_HDR.jpeg

My paint code is on the boot lid to right of the lock.

16 inch is probably a good option. Not sure if 17 inch and lower profile is good for uk crap roads/potholes.
Ride on 17 inch is ok but suspension will take more of the pain ... so more bills?

My second Multi (square nose) had the optional 17s and yes it was more crashy but did look cool. I buckled a wheel on a pot hole and had to get it straightened for £50! Hence why I bought the 16s as a winter back up.
Thanks for the colour code pointer. I'll go and have a look at lunch.20180710_082122_HDR.jpeg

I have the same 17inch wheels on my black flat chested (new shape) and one has a bit of a ding one wheel that past MOT OK and tyre fitting garage thought was OKish
170k miles on 15 inch stock alloys without any cracks or dings

Let us know what the spray is like.

I got a good touch up pot 15 ml on ebay. £5.50 or something
Seems good for my red female (not flat chested) one and has lacquer in it

Me and the Multi have a date with this thermostat for a Renault Espace 2.0. Luckily I brought some lube.

Took about 20 minutes, 18 minutes of which was trying to push the sodding thing in the hose.

Took for a quick drive. 3/4 of a mile of enthusiatic driving up a hill got to 2 bars. Another mile or so got us 3 bars! Then on the way back the illusive 4 bars! Long cost down a hill and it didn't drop to 3. Heater like a toasty hair dryer now. Took it home, topped up fluids while idling and checking for leaks. Checked again and the gauge had dropped to 3 - fine by me. Past the new thermostat the hose was getting hot so I'm sure its opening.

What a great result for £7.
