Hi all

I bought a mk 2 multipla about 2 months and love it.

Just had a nice 250 mile drive, and the gear stick felt loose afterwards I had another short journey to make the next morning and when I get there, I couldn't select reverse of 5th.

The stick is sitting off the right when in neutral.

I noticed a plate was missing a bolt so I replaced that and it now feels tight again but gear stick is still off centre and I still can't get 5th or reverse. 3rd and 4th are where 5th and revers should be.
1st and 2nd are where 3rd and 4th should be.

Like am sure it's just the one of the cables needs tightening but I can't find the adjuster for it.
The others one (1st to 2nd/3rd to 4th) has an adjustment in the engine bay but I can adjust the side to side one any advice would be brilliant.

The cable outer should be retained in brackets at gear box end and gear stick end by clips , if any clip missing then outer will move rather than the gear selection levers on the gear box causing problems.
Gearbox in neutral , under car, hold cable outer and try to move it to and from bracket on gearbox in line with cable , if either move there is a problem.
Check gear lever ends for clips by looking beneath gear lever gaiter, it should lift straight upwards.
It is easy to check this so maybe do this first.

Hi Jack

There is no movement in the outer of the gear linkage cable, and it is still clipped in to place in the engine bay. I am thinking that I may need to strip the gearbox down, but I am trying to avoid that as much as possible.

Did you check cable outers secure at gear lever end?

If yes check the mechanism on top of gearbox under rubber boot that side to side movement of gear lever moves up and down.

Reading Your first post again , I think it's possible you may have accidentally bolted the loose plate back on in slightly wrong location , unbolt it and see if there is another bolt hole.

Was the loose plate the cable attachment bracket on gearbox?
