Couldn't think of any place else to ask this!

My friends 04 Multipla failed the National Car Test (Irish MOT) because the quarter lights didn't have the Emark. Neither have it so we think that this part is plastic so therefore no Emark. Right or wrong?

I found one on my favourite buying site for a 01 Multipla - previous model. Anyone know if the part is interchangable?

Maybe someone would have one or 2 of these that they might be interested in passing on (would you call 2 quarter lights a half light??)

They failed because there is no emark but really they are frosted and they might fail anyway because of the frosting. But if we had some kind of proof that they are not emarked and the new ones wouldn't be either, they might accept that and pass the car. Load of baloney!

Thanks

John.

Is his a square nose?(facelift model) ... not the same rear lamps as the roundnose.. they are the ones on donedeal right?
I've a mk1... don't see any e mark on them .. there's a number engraved on them up high and pretty central but that could be a part number.

Yes. Face-lifted version. The part I saw was on eBay.

According to this eBay item 112168021682 (4th picture), the same door fits all multiplas.

Sorry... I read it as rear lights(thought u meant quarter panel).. don't think I've door lights on mine... will check!! That's pretty pedantic of the NCT centre!!

This sounds barmy to me. I believe the E mark on all the other glass is to show that they are toughened (and laminated in the case of the windscreen) and meet the requirements for light transmission. As these small quarterlight panels are plastic, the 'toughened' mark is meaningless. Fair enough, they may be going a bit cloudy now with age and UV exposure so might not be as transparent as they were when new, but it doesn't sound as though that's what they've failed it for. This is the second case of NCT pedantry we've had on here in the last couple of weeks. Has someone in Ireland got it in for Multiplas?

They are the same part on all models, btw, round or square nose. Part nos. are 46538827 for NS, 46538826 for OS. I shudder to think what they'll cost new now, if they are still available. Back in 2005 they were £45 each according to ePER, so they'll be double-that-and-a-bit now. It looks as though they're bonded in place.

Based on 10.5 of the NCT, it looks like they are failing them due to this:

5. Where windscreens, side or rear windows are fitted with glazing material other than safety glass the vehicle owner shall
provide a certificate from the manufacturer or installer stating that the glazing material is not likely, if fractured, to produce
fragments capable of causing severe cuts. In the case of rally cars, this may take the form of a note from the Technical
Commissioner of the RIAC in the vehicle log book.

The specific possible failure reasons are:

11 Made of material likely, if fractured, to produce
fragments capable of causing severe cuts.
12 Side or rear windows damaged such that
the driver’s view is restricted.

From what I can see, there would be no 'e' or kite mark on the quarterlights because they are neither glass, nor a glass-plastic windscreen.

So, looks like you need to speak to your local FIAT dealer

Ok figured it out... yeah that's pedantic alright test here is getting ridiculous , they spent an hour on my car last time before finally finding something.

Anyway looked at my "door lights".. bit frosted too... no E mark on them.
I'm sure a note from a fiat dealer stating this would be fine.
Similar problems with the relatively new camper van test here... al the windows must have markings on them and lads are having to contact the coach builders which are often in far flung corners of the earth.
Marty.

Retest is Wednesday, I think so we'll see. He got a letter from Fiat saying that this part doesn't have the emark but I do wonder will they change the story to "no longer transparent" I have found a couple on the internet but the fact is that these secondhand parts might be the very same. Was thinking of blanking them out alright!

I'll let you know how the test goes.....

No longer transparent?
Well that is an important consideration, after all, you wouldn't want to run over an Ant on a Bicycle that you missed because you couldn't see through that square inch of 'window' . . .

Honestly, talk about a classic 'jobsworth'!
I'd take it somewhere else after blanking it over, or even just paint it.
