I have searched the forum but not found anything identical to my symptoms.
My Multi 1.6 has done 200 000km and the throttle body needs a clean every few years. Last time my wife stepped on the accelerator to open the throttle, and I cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and a cloth. No problem. This time I opened the throttle with my finger while cleaning.

When I first started it after the clean, the engine shot up to maximum revs. Now ( a few days later) it idles at 1500 rpm, but after a few minutes of warming up it starts hunting between 1500 and 3000 rpm. A minute or two later it shoots up to maximum revs again. I have tried cleaning the white connector block under the left hand glove box. I have also driven it for about 10km to see if it would do a relearn. It improved but still revs out of control when warmed up. Any suggestions on what could be wrong are welcome!

No I haven't. Not sure how. Took it in to the dealer today, they may be doing a re-map...:(. Oh well. Wish I could get what the Americans call an oil 'catch can' to filter the oily fumes going through the EGR pipe. That would stop me from needing to clean the throttle body in the first place.

Sorry meant to say crank case ventilation pipe, not EGR pipe. It's a 1.6 petrol model.

Well, my problem is fixed. It seems that when I manually opened the throttle, it changed the cable adjustment, causing the over revving. They re-adjusted the cable and it is fine now. The technician also said that the wires on the throttle body sensors can sometimes become loose/ brittle with heat and age, which can also cause high idling.

Thanks for the help and advice. Hope this can help someone else with similar problems.

I have also made a DIY oil catch can ie. container with pot scrubber as filter, and plumbed it inline into the crankcase ventilation pipe. This can be cleaned every few months, and hopefully will prevent my throttle body and sensors from becoming fouled again.
