On the way home from work, pulled in to get diesel. When I started the car, half a second later it conked as if I left the clutch out too fast like a novice driver. Wouldn't start again and has this knocking sound when turning over the engine.
Had the AA out and they couldn't get it going. Also left me stranded as my policy is utter crap.
Any idea of what it could be?
1) Crank sensor. Electronic timing out - injecting before TDC?
I really, really hope this is it.
2) Valve timing slipped and hitting a valve (n)
3) Not sure what else.

Does it fire up, or only turn over on the starter?

Have you had a quick look at the condition of the cambelt cover to see if it's damaged?

Is the auxiliary belt loose?

Timing belt was only done a short time ago, and seemed fine when I looked at it last Friday. I have since changed the crank RPM sensor and the knocking noise is gone on turning the engine over but it still isn't starting.
As it turns over it can stop the starter turning the engine, I assume this is the fuel injected too soon and pushing against the piston? Presumably, when it was worst that was the cause of the knocking.
Would a cam timing sensor cause such trouble I wonder?

With the ignition off, can you turn the engine over by at least two full revolutions without hitting any 'solid' resistance, using a spanner on the centre bolt of the crankshaft pulley?

I'll give that a go, will know if timing has slipped or not then. Thankfully not getting the knocking sound anymore so I'm really hoping valve timing is fine and that it is an electronic fuel injection timing issue.
Next stop check the cam sensor. Don't think there is anything else, including sensors, that affects the electronic timing of the fuel injection.
