I just wanted to share (a bit of therapy - share the pain) some experience I have recently had with upgrading the turbo on our JTD Multijet.
So, all the Fiat and Alfa JTDs (apart from the 105 JTD) use the GT1749V turbos of one form or another. The GT1749V turbos are not all make equal and there are a lot of differences between them.

The story goes like this, I was doing the timing belt etc before putting the mulitpla on the road and decided to check wear on the turbo. It had some play, more than I was happy with so, while I had the time and another car on the road with tax; I decided to rebuild the turbo. On the multijet was the 777251 version of the 1749V. I searched to see if I could put a better core (CHRA) onto the standard housings. Not possible, as things can be very different. The version for the 110 & 115 is 712766.

I ordered a kit for the 1749, the rebuild kits seem to be very similar. While waiting for that, I picked up an Alfa GT 16V turbo off ebay and got a kit and stepped gap seal for that as well. The 16V version is 716665.

After rebuilding both turbos I went about putting the 716665 on the 8V manifold. I had heard that by drilling out the holes it fits. Unfortunately this didn't work for me and I had to drill and tap the manifold. I have attached some images of these.

Put on the 16V lump and put the lot together, even used a little exhaust putty to prevent exhaust leakage between the manifold and turbo. Just to do things properly. Went for a drive and little to no boost. Vacuum actuator I thought. Had a look and it wasn't moving. Stripped the lot down again and found that some of the exhaust putty had squeezed into the exhaust, broken off, fallen into the turbine wheel and destroyed the vanes:bang::bang::bang:

So, now I'm back to the standard turbo - but at least I have that.
Anyway, the 716665 should be good for 1.5 Bar easily while the 712766 and 777251 are normally only used for 1 bar. So there should be a bit of scope for tuning there if properly re-mapped. And for gods sake don't put any exhaust putty on the manifold!!
