I know there are lots of similar thread on this forum and I have read them!
I have a similar problem, so here goes.

I have a multipla 1.9jtd on a 54 plate. Just recorded over 85k miles.
I blanked off the EGR about 3000 miles ago as it was the easiest thing to do at the time to get the car running ok again. Never had a problem with it since then and as I don't have fingers like ET I decided to leave it like that.

Last month the alternator started to fail and whilst at the garage I realised that the timing belt was well over due so had them both replaced.

Since the work the engine management light has been permanently on with the horrible beep along with 'contact garage'...aaarrrggggg! It was never a problem prior to this. I took it back and they plugged it in but all the options would cost a lot of money and it may not even resolve the problem. Having just spent £500 on the previous work I really don't want to be shelling out more money in the knowledge that it may not work.

The car starts fine. In neutral it will rev ok. However once there is a load on the engine it will not pass 3000 rpm. However if I turn the engine off and restart it will run perfectly for a couple of minute ie rev normally then return to max of 3000rpm.

My questions are; Do people on the forum think this may be a simple fix?
Could the garage have disturbed or not reconnected something during previous work? Is the fault light just a coincidence that happened to come on at the same time as the work?

I bow down to the font of knowledge that is the forum and hopefully await some guidance.

Many thanks,

John.

p.s. I love my multi apart from that annoying beep and lack of revs!

Can you get the garage (or anyone else) to reset the warning lights, then take it out for a test drive, give it a bootful once warm and make a note of the revs when the beep sounds?

The garage could have disturbed the pipe to/from the MAP sensor. It's a thin (often red) plastic tube about 3-4mm diameter that runs from the MAP sensor (which is around the back of the cylinder head) down to the boost solenoid, which is on a bracket below and to the left of the battery tray as you look from the front of the car. Check this tube very carefully - by feel is the best way - and also the bits of rubber tube that it's pushed into (look very closely at them because they perish).

If you loose vacuum in this tube, the turbo doesn't function properly, nor does the ECU, so you get the EML on. It's quite easy to disturb this pipe when working on the car.

As lankytim says, any logged fault codes would give more clues.

BTW - is your Multi a roundnose?

Thanks for your help.
The bloke at the garage, who I have been using for 20+ years thinks that after reading the fault codes that the 'Turbo wastegate solonoid' is faulty.

Where is it?

Could it be vacuum issue rather that the solonoid?

My first post wasn't that clear the EML is on all the time and beeps when you start it. It will however rev ok if I stop the engine and restart it, but will revert to 'limp mode' after a few 'high' revs.

Please help....it's driving me mad!!!

Hi Cilli , any joy? Sounds exactly like the issue I'm having with mine. Take it on lots of long runs and has had severeral cleaning treatments through it but engine failure light still comes on. Has anyone ever got to the bottom of this issue as I'm just looking set to spend a fortune on trial and error part replacements!

I think it is a case of a lot of people have been there done that but there is never a really satisfactory end post with the final solution. Here is a final solution post which was my journey down this particular road. I had the 2800/3,000 rpm limp mode/engine light/beep issue. At first you could, after it had come on you could sort of go through it on a downhill section which gradually got the revs higher and the engine light would go off but then it would come straight back on again when you approached 2800/3000 rpm zone again and to be fair it was pretty consistent. I did not like the idea of blanking off the EGR so I took the EGR off and cleaned it carefully reassembled it and the problem of limp mode remained. I then replaced the MAF sensor on the air cleaner inlet. No difference other than I now could not accelerate through the 2800 rpm limp/engine light/beep block as before. The next thing I changed was the solenoid that controls boost pressure which is under the air cleaner box area. No difference. Next up was the MAP sensor on the back of the inlet manifold - no difference. I then replaced the previously cleaned EGR valve with a new genuine [FIAT box but bought from Ebay] item. Problem fixed. Gone away forever Hooray.
I could have saved quite a bit if I had known the EGR valve is a very hit and miss thing to clean and I had replaced it in the first place. But hopefully my journey will be of help to you.
I have a 105,000 mile 2003 115 ELX JTD which like most surviving Multipla's an electric EGR valve.

Hi I have a petrol 1.6 2003 with a very similar problem. Do the petrol engines have the same valve or is it a completely different set up?
