Hi,

I’m hoping for some sagely advice. I have a 2001 JTD ELX.

Recently after a long run the car developed a very mechanical noise when running. It didn’t seem like the engine and seemed more on the nearside.
I had a look and there is some wetness at the bottom of the gearbox and engine. I knew the nearside inner driveshaft CV boot needed doing so I thought I’d have a look at that side.

I did notice when the car was first jacked up how hard it was to turn the wheel. I removed the wheel, the brake caliper was then removed and tied to the coil spring to keep it out of the way. I got the driveshaft off but despite a small split in the cv boot, it was still full of grease and did not seem to be worn/damaged. I then turned the brake disc and noticed it was still stiff so
I assumed the bearing had gone. I got the bearing replaced and replaced the CV boot and refitted everything. While I was there I also double checked the gearbox oil level and that was fine. Took it for a short test drive and all seemed fine.

Drove to work OK, but on the way back in the evening, the car a slight return of the noise but then it started involuntarily slowing down as if someone had hit the brakes but I was not breaking. This seemed to happen at random times on the way home but got progressively worse. The engine seemed to be running fine when I de-clutched. At times it would suddenly slow down and even if I had my foot to the floor it would keep slowing then slowly speed up. I only just made it home. I then checked both break discs and the nearside was red hot but the offside was warm/hot. From this I thought it was the brake sticking.

So today I have removed the nearside brake caliper (the pads were very tight on the disc) and serviced it and bled the brakes. The caliper is free to move in and out now. So went for a longer test drive and all initially seemed OK.
So, it seems when the car gets up to temperature the noise comes back and the involuntarily slowing down starts.

I have checked the offside driveshaft and that seems OK but the noise seems like a driveshaft knocking (no it’s not the drop links).
So now the car is jacked up and I have no real idea what is wrong but I fear the worse that the gearbox is on it’s way out.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
