Whine in 3rd gear

Hi all I got a 2001 Multipla JTD 110 ELX. Bought it about a month ago and have fallen in love with it. Its been around the world 163k but engine runs sweet sounds better than a 65k 1 up the road from me lol. Anyway I knew when buying it at that mileage it will need a few jobs soon. The time has come iv just replaced both rear wheel cylinders rear shocks and both front wishbones with all bushes d bar bushes anti roll bars track rod ends and tie rod ends along with new drums shoes front discs pads and 4x wheel bearings and speed/abs sensors. needless to say this has cost me a fair whack. driving today and pulled off from traffic lights 1st into second fine then into 3rd gear when accelerating there's a kind of whine/metal grinding type noise hard to explain but if you know your multiplas then you will know what I mean straight away. I have done a bit of research and a lot have said gearbox bearings/seals etc. but its only happening in 3rd gear at the moment? Any ideas anyone would be greatly appreciated.
Just to add it had a new clutch kit 40k ago and apart from a little judder on pull off it goes into perfectly fine and clutch isn't slipping etc.

Whine in 3rd gear

Hi, and welcome to the Forum, and the whacky world of Multiplas in general

Might be worth draining your Gearbox Oil and checking it for any Metal particles.
Dip a small Magnet into it (drain it into a plastic container).
Shining a Torch onto the surface will show up fine particles as well.

Refilling with fresh Oil wouldn't hurt, given the mileage.

Does it whine on the overrun (e.g. steep downhill with foot off the 'go' pedal), as well as under power?

Re: Whine in 3rd gear

No it just whines/grinds when hard accelerating not noticed it up a hill like I say only in 3rd gear but since its been OK? Like I said it had a new clutch 40k ago could it be down to dirty gearbox oil or even low oil? Thanks for the quick reply too.

Only one way to find out really

Checking the level and/or refilling is quite easy, that is if your plugs aren't seized up.
You can fill through the level plug, so the state of the fill plug is unimportant, which is good, as it's the least accessible of the three.

Checking/Filling/Draining Gearbox Oil

I'd be tempted to add a little Molyslip (or similar) to the Oil as well.

Re: Whine in 3rd gear

Seems straight forward I will try that first. Thanks for the info.

It might be best if you just drain it and refill with fresh oil, regardless of how the original stuff looks.
Jack up the right side a little, so the drain-plug is at the 'low' end of the box for draining, then have it level for refilling.
Helps if it's warm as well, so drive it for 15-20 minutes beforehand.
