Multipla engine swap...

Hi,

I recently purchased a 1962 Fiat Multipla (600d?). I'm pretty new to the Fiat world and was hoping to get some advice from you all.

1st: I'd like to know where I can find a recommended mechanic shop in my area. I don't think there are many vintage Multipla owners in the US, so that leads me to believe there may not be many mechanic shops that will know their way around this thing. I live in the Bay Area, near San Francisco, CA if that helps.

2nd: I would like to have the engine swapped with something more driveable. The current engine, which I believe is a 730 cc (I could be wrong) tops out at around 50 - 60 MPH and overheats way too often. That is no help on the freeways. I'd like to replace the engine with something that has a little umph...or kick to it, and maybe tops out at around 70-80 MPH.

3rd: Could I convert this car to a 5-speed? It is currently a 4-speed. To accomdate my daily driving needs, the engine and tranny swap do not need to be stock. I just want to use this puppy on a daily basis, without many problems if possible.

4th: If anyone could dig up any additional info on this car or forward any resource, links, etc. my way...I would REALLY appreciate it.

It's really hard finding info and assistance about this car. But hopefully you all can help.

Thanks again,

NC

Re: Multipla engine swap...

Its a Fiat 600 engine iirc. So you can do what the 600 owners do in terms of engine swap/upgrades. You can get 600 gearboxes, but the only i've seen are racing ones

I have seen a fiat 600 running vw beetle engine and transmission. One has been build here in the UK in recent years but take there inspiration from this car:

Re: Multipla engine swap...

I've seen a Fiat 600 running a Chevy V8! Only problem was that the car became a two seater as the driver and passenger sat in the back seat because the engine and transmission tunnel came right inside the car.

Perhaps the best option is to find a flat four engine and trans that could fit? Alfa Romeo Alfasud, Citroen GS, VW Beetle (as already mentioned) spring to mind. Or even a Subaru flat four engine? Some of these would also give you a 5 speed transaxle as well.

Saying that, you'd be better off finding an engine/ transaxle that was meant to be rear wheel drive in the first place, which limits your options. The Beetle won't give you a five speeder, but if it would fit you could try a Skoda Estelle/ Rapid straight four engine maybe?

I doubt if any would fit without some major work, but it would sure make a fun vehicle
