OK, This 04 plate JTD I have had lying here for over a year, I need to finally fix it!

Bought it with a duff engine, changed the engine, while preparing it, two glowplugs snapped and I had to take the head off.

Having fitted it, it turns over nicely, but once it starts running it sounds like horrific diesel knock.

Runs smoothly (but noisy), drives fine - even passes the MOT test.

Now - I have a funny feeling the head gaskets for these are available in several different thicknesses - can anyone advise here?

I may try changing the head gasket for a thicker one, as the (another) spare engine I have I would rather sell to my mate who needs one.

So if anyone can tell me a) if there are different thicknesses of gasket available and b) how to tell which one SHOULD be fitted, then both myself and my mate would be very grateful.

eper has been down on the forum for the last day or two. It's up again now. Hurrah.

For my 04 plate roundnose JTD, there are 3 head gaskets listed:
55190356 - Further info says 0.82mm thick; identifier is 'T03 - without notch/holes'
55190357 - Further info says 0.92mm thick; identifier is 'T04 - 1 notch/hole'
55190358 - Further info says 1.02mm thick; identifier is 'T05 - 2 notches/holes'

Hopefully that makes more sense to you than it does to me. It looks as though the different thicknesses are tagged with a distinct hole pattern somewhere.

But as BD says, are you sure that it's the head gasket that's at fault?

If you still have the original gasket you could check on the thickness with the info WMF listed above, and compare with what you have fitted now.
The identifier tab should be visible 'in-situ', it should protrude from the joint.

No, I've checked and re-checked the timing several times. I've even tried changing the injectors in case that was the fault.

Don't have the original head gasket that came out of it either (I changed this engine nearly a year ago now), but I do remember the replacement seemed thinner.

I now have new head bolts and the thickest gasket, so I'll change it sometime soon and see what happens.

Failing that - I'll just need to change the engine again.
