Hello,
I am wondering if anyone is able to offer some advice on a problem with my wife's Multi. It is a 2001 JTD 110 ELX and, for some time now, has been leaking oil from the gearbox.
During our summer holiday in 2009, it became apparent that the gearbox was short of oil (became very noisy). The cause was a slow leak somewhere underneath. The source of the leak appeared to be where the offside (long) driveshaft goes into the casing. To this end I replaced the driveshaft seal. However, the leaking continued.
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to extract the driveshaft again to have a look and found that the seal had not been properly inserted. As a precaution, I replaced the seal and made sure it was properly in place. I also completely removed the inner half of the driveshaft and thoroughly inspected it. There are no apparent signs of wear. It seemed to fit back through the seal very snugly. After reassembly and use, the car is still losing gearbox oil.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Ian
