When I'm driving above about 30 mph,
a) bearing right, I can hear a noise (similar to a noisy road surface) and feel a roughness through the steering,
b) driving straight ahead, I hear / feel the same effect but reduced, and
c) bearing left, normal.

The effect is the same whether in gear or not, so it is not engine related.

Does this sound like a front wheel bearing is going ?

If so, should I be replacing both front wheel bearings together ?

And would you agree that a Fiat dealer would not have any special knowledge or special tools, so I may as well use a cheaper garage ?

I wouldn't replace both as there should be no significant reduction for having both done at the same time.

It's not a DIY job, hub needs to come off, the bearings need to be pressed in and out, also the ABS sensor is a bit fragile, best left to an indepedant.
