Our 2001 1.9 JTD of 118k miles, is in need of some TLC on the suspension.

I've ordered some poly ARB bushes, as packing and nail tricks no longer work, the drop links were replaced for the 3rd time back in Sept.

Visible inspection of front wishbones seem to be OK, but thinking these may need doing.

I am however, getting a different sounding knocking from the rear (side undetermined). It's more metallic in sound and happens even on smooth surfaces when car moves side to side.

For this, my initial diagnosis is the pin/bearing/bushes that hold the rear trailing arms.

When underneath that area recently, i noticed one side had grease oozing out which suggests a seal failure.

I also noticed bad perishing on the rear shock bushes.

From people's experiences here,

1. Is it best/easy to replace the front wishbones?

2. Is it best/easy to replace the rear trailing arms completely or just replace the pin/bearings/seals etc?

3. If replacing the rear trailing arms as an assy, do you get the rear wheel bearing included in the assy?

4. Is it best to replace the rear shocks?

Cheers.

1. Easier to replace the entire wishbone than just the bushes. The complete wishbones with outer ball joint and inner bushes used to be available for very little money (< £20) but current best price looks to be about £45 per side.

2. Again, easier to replace the entire trailing arm than just the bushes, but they're not so cheap - depending on whether you've got ABS or not, they can be over £100 per side. From your description of the noise, check the condition of the rear subframe bushes before committing to the trailing arms.

3. Not sure

4. No need if the current ones aren't shot.
