I have a leaking oil seal on the gearbox where the diveshaft goes in , i've got a new seal and new bolts for the cover. but was told i have to measure the shimm's inside and replace if worn. does anyone know what or how this is done

Thankfully I've not experienced this before but having to shim a driveshaft oiilseal sounds unnecessary.
An oilseal isn't a precision item, it's a Fiat not a bl@@dy Ferrari.

This is just my opinion but happy to be corrected.

presumably they're suggesting that the oil seal might be leaking because of diff bearing play? I think I'd just change it and see if it works, if it still leaks you're only down the cost of the seal.

i went to fiat dealer about the shimms, they have 10 different sizes , and are £10 each.
