My key is broken. Now I want to make a 'new' one from the broken one and one without transponder-chip. I have to take out the old broken piece from the blue 'holder'. Anyone experience with this? See pic

Hi there.

 I'm not sure you can. Even if the 'bipper' doesn't work, the key still needs the transponder in it to communicate with the ecu I think. I could be wrong.

Keys are specifically coded to the car, I am sure of that much. The alarm operation isn't necessarily relevant, it's the immobiliser and ecu operation that require a coded key.

Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong. Is anyone using a simple 'cut' key on their Multipla?

I didn't explain right; At the picture you can see how I start my MP now. The upper key is a plain kay and the lower one is broken off. What I want to do is take the 'beard' of the upper key and place it in the housing of the lower one. I only have to find a way to get the broken off piece out of the lower one..

I'll make another picture when I'm done :)

(y) Oh I see! Sorry, what a twit! :bang:

That really is thinking outside the box. What a splendid idea.

It must be possible. At first glance, a very small drill bit to remove it and a pop rivet to replace it? Must be something better but that's just my first thoughts.

Keep us informed.(y)

Seeing the mould split lines on my key, I think you may find it difficult. I think the metal key blade is moulded into the plastic part. The first picture you posted shows that the base of the metal part has a lug on it. You could take a chance, hold it firmly in a vice and pull very hard on the blue plastic bit, but I reckon you'll wreck the plastic.

Where did you find the first picture? As that shows the metal bit on its own, they must have managed to get it apart!

Re: key repair -fixed!

I fixed it! This is how I did it:
1. I took the blue key (that's the broken one with the print-plate and battery inside)
2. I separated the key in both halves- just like you do when you change the battery
4. I drilled in the middle of the plastic where I assumed the whole would be
3. I held the metal -broken part- with a plier into a fire so the plastic would be a little warm and not break too quick
4. With another plier I jerked the metal piece out
5. The rest was easy; I took the black spare key and sawed it to fit, With some superglue put it into place and voila
I am some kind of proud I did it and the key works perfect!

Hi...We also have a broken key  Just been quoted £297 for a new one! This might sound like a dim question...Did you get an ordinary replacement key cut or did you already have spare key? I have second hand Y reg Multipla, but it not supplied with a basic spare key, just 2 keys with the blue 'holders'. Thankyou.

Hi, I had a spare key already. Only the chip was no good but the key itself was good. But I think you can also use a spare key cut by the shoe-store. The idea is the same
you can mail me at [email protected] if you want

Key repair

Another option would be to simply bond the Transponder chip in place on the sensor ring, so it's permanently 'on'.
Then you could use any 'normal' £5 copied key.
No potential thief would know...
